Cidermill coaches renewing their first aid & CPR. Probably the most fun I've had at a first aid and CPR course. Thanks

🐴 Is My Horse Happy?

One major focus of my students is to consider the horse's expression and body language while under saddle.

I love an ambitious rider, but what is the point of reaching a personal PB if your partner isn’t a willing participant. We have to ask ourselves: When do my personal goals begin to overshadow my horse’s well-being?

The View from the Ground
As a coach, I watch horses ranging from seasoned schoolmasters to show horses. I see their expressions as they try to interpret various riders' cues.

Too often, I see a horse become visibly "shut down" or upset by a rider’s insistent, yet failed, attempt at asking a question. That persistence usually stems from a personal goal. For example: "I want to get a canter transition," rather than a mutually beneficial goal like, "I'd like to develop a clean canter transition."

The former considers the rider's personal ambitions , feeling an entitlement to move up the levels. The latter is a humbler approach, in which the rider is responsible for developping the horse's physical strength and skill through a harmonious partnership. The onus falls on the rider to send clear messages, introduce exercises that will improve their horse's strength and balance and thus build a relationship of trust with their horse. As a result, every ride is constructive (both physically and mentally) and enjoyable.

Being attentive to our horse's expressions also allows us to identify weakness and/or mild lameness. If we listen closely, our horse will tell us when a movement is uncomfortable. That they require more strength to succeed.

Remember:
If you expect your horse to listen to you throughout the ride...
You must, in turn, listen to your horse.

The result will be a much more well rounded mount. One with the ability to self regulate and fewer injuries, as they are not pushed beyond their limits.

Let’s ride for the partnership, not just the PB.
