Wishing Dalhousie Women’s Hockey alumna Jasmine Kwan, the best of luck as she presents her research this week at the 10th World Congress of Biomechanics in Vancouver, BC! Jasmine is once again proving that the crease isn’t just a place to defend - it’s a place to discover.
Her undergraduate honours thesis, completed in April 2025, explored a topic few have studied: the biomechanics of goaltender glove positioning during simulated gameplay. As a member of the Dalhousie Tigers women’s hockey team, she brought firsthand experience to her research. She also coaches minor hockey goaltenders, giving her valuable insight into performance and coaching methodology. Through an extensive literature review, she identified a significant gap in the field: much of goaltending instruction is based on subjective observation rather than objective data.
Now pursuing her master’s degree under the supervision of Dr. Ryan Frayne, Jasmine is building on that work by using electromyography (EMG) to examine muscle activation patterns in goaltenders.
Beyond its academic contributions, Jasmine’s research has important practical applications. “If players understand how fatigue affects goalies, they can use that tactically,” she explains. “And for strength and conditioning coaches, this data can help design training programs that mitigate those effects.”
The World Congress of Biomechanics is one of the world's premier conferences in the field, bringing together researchers, clinicians, engineers, and students from around the globe to share ideas and showcase the latest advances in biomechanics.
This year’s Congress features a diverse scientific program covering both established and emerging areas of research, including wearable sensor technology, artificial intelligence, regenerative medicine, and novel medical devices. Alongside research presentations, attendees will participate in workshops and networking opportunities that foster collaboration and inspire the next generation of innovation in biomechanics.
We are proud to see Jasmine’s research recognized on the international stage and look forward to following her continued success as she makes her mark in the field of biomechanics research.

Dalhousie Tigers Icons Nancy Garapick and Nigel Kemp Receive Swimming Canada’s Highest Honour
A legendary coach and one of Canada's greatest swimmers are being recognized among the sport's all-time greats.
Dalhousie's longtime swimming coach Nigel Kemp and former Tiger and Halifax Trojan standout Nancy Garapick have been inducted into Swimming Canada's Circle of Excellence, an honour announced during the Bell Canadian Swimming Trials as the nation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.
Garapick, who passed away earlier this year, made history throughout her remarkable career. At just 13 years old, she set a world record in the 200-metre backstroke, becoming one of the youngest swimmers ever to achieve the feat. She went on to win two medals at the 1975 World Championships before capturing bronze in both the 100- and 200-metre backstroke at the 1976 Olympic Games.
Her longtime coach, Nigel Kemp, helped build one of the most successful swimming programs in Canadian university history during his 27 seasons at Dalhousie. Under his leadership, the Tigers captured 27 conference championships while producing 63 national medalists, including 19 national champions. Kemp also served on Canada's Olympic coaching staff, coached at multiple World Championships and Commonwealth Games, and was recognized 10 times as Atlantic University Sport’s Coach of the Year.
Together, Kemp and Garapick helped put Halifax and Dalhousie on the international swimming map, inspiring generations of athletes with their pursuit of excellence.
Congratulations to Nigel Kemp and the late Nancy Garapick on this well-deserved recognition and enduring legacy in Canadian swimming.

🚨New Tiger Alert 🚨
Dalhousie men's basketball head coach Rick Plato is pleased to announce the commitment of Grayson Ritzand for the 2026-27 season.
A 6'5 small forward from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Ritzand joins the Tigers as one of Canada's top recruits. A dynamic scorer with a relentless motor on the glass, he brings size, toughness, and versatility to Dalhousie's lineup.
Ritzand enjoyed an outstanding high school career at Wellington Secondary and Uchenna Academy. During two seasons at Wellington, he averaged 33.2 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game while leading the program to North Island and Island Championships in 2025. He then averaged 26.0 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game at Uchenna Academy against elite competition.
His accomplishments include being named Wellington Secondary Senior Boys MVP in 2024-25, earning Provincial First Team All-Star honours, and finishing as Wellington's all-time leading scorer. He also received Uchenna Academy's Student-Athlete of the Year award for his excellence on and off the court.
Ritzand chose Dalhousie because of its strong academic opportunities and the culture Coach Plato has built within the Tigers program. He plans to study Arts while pursuing a future in sports management.
Coach Plato has shared his excitement on his team's newest recruit.
"We are thrilled to welcome Grayson to the Tigers family,” says Plato. “Securing a player of his calibre is a major recruiting success for our program. I would like to thank his high school coach, and former Tiger, Brian Lennox, for not only helping develop such an outstanding player, but also for speaking so highly of Dalhousie and the Halifax community.
Grayson is a tenacious rebounder and a physical presence around the basket who will immediately add toughness and rebounding strength. Simply put, he can score and has all the tools to make an immediate impact. I believe Grayson has the potential to follow in the footsteps of impactful first-year Tigers like Alex Carson and Keevan Veinot and have no doubt the AUS will quickly learn who Grayson Ritzand is."

🚨New Tiger Alert 🚨
Coach Plato has announced the commitment of 6'9 forward Andre Novicic of Vancouver, British Columbia, to the Dalhousie Tigers men's basketball team.
Andre joins the Tigers following two seasons with the University of Ottawa, where he was part of a highly successful program that captured the OUA Championship during the 2024-25 season and went on to earn a bronze medal at the U SPORTS National Championship. Prior to his university career, Andre starred at King George Secondary School, helping lead the program to two city championships, two zone championships, and a Provincial Championship in 2023.
Andre was drawn to Dalhousie by the program's history of success and the winning culture that has been established within the Tigers basketball program. He was particularly attracted to the standards of competitiveness, and commitment to excellence that Coach Plato and his staff emphasize throughout the program.
As he prepares to begin his career as a Tiger, Andre is looking forward to becoming part of the team's culture and contributing to its continued success.
