NOVA SCOTIA SENIOR BASEBALL LEAGUE TO HONOUR JIM “RICO” McEACHERN, RETIRE NUMBER LEAGUE-WIDE
July 7, 2026
Sydney, NS – The Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League is proud to announce that it will honour Jim “Rico” McEachern, President/GM of the Sydney Sooners, for his extraordinary dedication and commitment to supporting and promoting baseball over the past 50 years, by retiring his number throughout the league. Though individual teams have retired numbers in their own communities, this marks the first time such an honour has been bestowed league-wide.
"On behalf of the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League, we are proud to honour Jim ‘Rico’ McEachern by retiring his #3 league-wide in recognition of his decades of service, commitment and leadership to baseball in Nova Scotia, the NSSBL and the Sydney Sooners," said Brad Jacobs, NSSBL President.
McEachern’s name is synonymous with the Sydney Sooners because of his long-time involvement with the club. He both played and managed the Sooners from their inaugural season in 1977 until 2001, when he retired from the coaching ranks. He returned to the bench in 2009 and guided the Sooners to league championships in 2013, 2014, and 2017. In 2009, he was inducted into the Cape Breton Sport Hall of Fame as a builder.
"While this is the first time the NSSBL has bestowed a league-wide number retirement, the decision was an easy one," Jacobs said. "Rico’s legacy is unprecedented, and the unanimous support of our Board and the league’s other four teams reflects the respect he has earned across senior baseball in Nova Scotia."
The ceremony will take place on Saturday July 11 at 6:30 p.m., prior to the start of the 7 p.m. game against the Kentville Wildcats at the Susan McEachern Memorial Ballfield. Fans are advised to arrive by 6:15 p.m. before the start of the event. There is no admission for the ceremony or evening game, and the league is encouraging the community to come out and show its support for the Sydney Sooners.
The NSSBL is a volunteer organization, and it is through the efforts of all teams and numerous volunteers that senior baseball continues to be a viable, competitive sport in Nova Scotia. In 2026, both the league and the Sydney Sooners are celebrating 50 years of senior baseball in the province.
