Poet Sean Arthur Joyce will launch his 8th book "Garden of pomegranates"

06/08/2026

Garden of Pomegranates PR for Grand Forks

Nothing reaches the heart quite like a powerful poem. Join poet Sean Arthur Joyce as he launches his 8th book of poems, Garden of Pomegranates,
4th Street Studio
in Grand Forks, June 26, 7 pm.
Joyce is the author of more than a dozen books, including Western Canadian history, essays, and a distinctly Kootenay novel, Mountain Blues. The book launch event is kindly sponsored by local business Nurtured by Nature.

With precise and insightful economy of language, Joyce sketches elegant word portraits of people glimpsed in his travels or drawn from his personal life. These poems are selected from his earlier work, published during the 1990s and early 2000s, with a section of poems that chart the tempestuous nature of romantic love—something everyone can relate to. The yearning for honest communion with other souls is as prominent here as in his later work. Joyce’s 2024 collection, Pole Shift & Other Poems, was described by John Adams College Professor Carl Eric Scott as “the best poetry book of the year,” adding that “your poetry carries a punch and provides a balm like few other things can".

For any garden to thrive takes close attention to detail and the weary task of weeding out the undesirables. In that respect, every poem is a garden. It should also grow with each reading—today, or 50 years from now. “In going over poems I hadn’t read in 30 years, I didn’t expect to like them,” Joyce explains. “Many have never been published outside of magazines, making this very nearly a ‘lost’ book. The pleasant discovery is that they’ve held up surprisingly well.”

Sean Arthur ‘Art’ Joyce retired from a 35-year career as freelance journalist in 2025. For 20 of those years he was both investigative reporter and Arts and Culture Editor for the Valley Voice in the Slocan Valley. His popular “Heritage Beat” column ran in the Nelson Daily News from 1996–2000, was the most popular column in the newspaper, and is still used by Kootenay history researchers today. His nonfiction title Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest: Canada’s Home Children in the West is a perennial bestseller for Radiant Press of Regina, and was described by the late Cole Harris, Professor Emeritus of Historical Geography (UBC) as “a significant contribution to Canadian history.”

Joyce’s books can be purchased at Coyote Books (Grand Forks), Raven’s Nest (New Denver), Silverton General Store (Silverton), Eurhythmy Books & Studio (Kaslo), Spiritwood Books & Gifts (Nakusp), Otter Books and Notably Books (Nelson).
