In a great spirited match of social rugby both sides played to the true spirit of the game. UNB was able to come out on top in this annual match. Laura’s family was on hand for the game and enjoyed a great game in Laura’s memory. Another great aspect of the game was young ref, Isabelle Jewett, who plays for ESA and the U17 Loyalist girls, being in the middle for her first game ever and comported herself very well.

Afternoon Loyalists,

Sad to share news of the passing of former Loyalist coach David Pirie. Here is the obituary - https://mcadamsfh.com/tribute/details/2564/David-Pirie/obituary.html

David coached the club's men's team in the late 1980's before handing the reins to fellow Scotsman Keith McAlpine. After his time coaching he became an organizer/coach for the mini rugby program.

Before passing the torch to Keith he took them over from Peter Pacey and Malcom MacAfee who had coached in player/coach capacities the previous year. I asked Dad for his thoughts on David and he shared the following:

"David was a Scotsman through and through and true Blue. With his Scottish brogue, his quick wit and penchant for true grit, Dave was a great coach and mentor. He loved rugby and and embrated the club wholeheartedly.

He also loved life and his wife and family, and we share their grief and send them sympathy and empathy in their loss and mourning. Let us all raise a toast and down a dram in his honour."

Simon Pacey also asked Loyalist historian George Bidlake to share what he could about David and he found some quotes in the Gleaner from him in the lead up the the 1989 season. Very interesting to see that history and his perspective on the upcoming season 37 years ago.

Dave's prediction was that 'If the players can direct their skills and energy in a positive way, I'm quite confident we can make the Caledonia Cup." His prediction was spot on; the team made the Caledonia Cup but suffered a narrow loss the Halifax RFC at home that year.

Per the obituary, as per David's wishes there will be no funeral ceremony. So to honour Dave's contribution to the club we will raise a glass to him after training tonight at the club around 8pm. Please join if you are able.

Also, per the obituary, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sara Burns Forever Fund through the Fredericton Community Foundation website, www.fredfdn.ca/donate.

Rest in peace David and thank you for your contributions to the club.
