🧠 DID YOU KNOW? CROSSING THE MIDLINE 🐦🔥
We asked Coach Sarah what the best thing she learned at Gymnastics Ontario Congress was this year.
Despite all the big skills, drills and gymnastics she saw, her answer was surprisingly simple.
🐦🔥Truly understanding how beneficial crossing the midline is for children🐦🔥 — and how we can intentionally create more of these essential experiences during gymnastics classes. 💫
Crossing the midline happens whenever an arm or leg crosses the imaginary line running down the centre of the body. Cartwheels, climbing, crawling patterns and other cross-body movements all practise it.
And these same underlying motor abilities are important throughout a child's school day:
🧠 Motor Planning — organizing movements for multi-step tasks and following physical instructions.
👀 Visual Tracking — following words across a page, keeping your place while reading and copying from the board.
🤸 Bilateral Coordination — using both sides together for cutting, writing, using a ruler and handling school supplies.
🧭 Body Awareness — navigating the classroom, sitting and moving at a desk and participating in gym class.
✋ Hand Dominance & Cross-Body Control — efficiently using a preferred hand across the workspace for writing, colouring and drawing.
⚡ Coordination — combining what the eyes see with what the body does during writing, playground activities and physical education.
Sometimes the smallest movements have a BIG purpose. ❤️
Your child may think they're climbing, crawling, rolling and cartwheeling. We know they're also practising important motor skills they use far beyond the gym.

THE GYMNASTICS CLASS-NAME TRAP
Your child started in Little Stars.
Then graduated to Mighty Stars.
Then became a Superstar.
It certainly sounds like three levels of progression.
But what actually changed?
Recreational gymnastics does not have a universal naming system that makes terms like “Mighty,” “Super,” “Advanced,” or “Rising” automatically represent a particular gymnastics standard. That means parents should look past the class name and into the actual curriculum.
At Fort Erie’s Fantastic Gymnastics (FEFG), our Beginner standards establish the foundations we hope athletes can develop during approximately their first year in the sport.
From there, Intermediate programming represents a genuine increase in skill expectations—not simply another name for essentially the same class.
And at FEFG, moving up isn't based on how long you've been here.
If your child moves from Beginner to Intermediate, it's because they are actually ready to begin learning the next set of skills—not simply because they've completed one session with us.
Parents deserve to know:
What is my child learning?
What have they mastered?
What new skills will they learn when they move up?
A fancy new class title might sound like advancement.
REAL PROGRESSION IS WHEN THE GYMNASTICS PROGRESSES TOO.

🤸 Beginner or Intermediate Gymnastics — Which One Is Right for Your Child?
Not sure which gymnastics class to register for? Beginner and Intermediate aren’t about how old your child is — they’re about what they’re ready to learn next. ❤️
At Fort Erie’s Fantastic Gymnastics, our recreational program builds skills progressively across vault, bars, beam, floor AND acrobatic/group gymnastics.
🌟 BEGINNER GYMNASTICS
Perfect for children building their foundations! We focus on fundamental gymnastics skills, balance, coordination, strength, body awareness, safe landings, basic inversions and confidence.
🔥 INTERMEDIATE GYMNASTICS
Ready for the next challenge? Intermediate athletes refine their basics while progressing toward more advanced inversions, stronger bar skills, bridge and walkover preparation, higher acrobatic balances, partner work and introductory performance routines.
And gymnastics is about so much more than learning a cartwheel.
We’re Teaching Life Skills and Fitness Through Fun — helping kids develop confidence, perseverance, teamwork, strength, flexibility and a love of being active. ❤️
