Why do certain stories stay with us? Why do we see ourselves in particular characters, relationships, villains, heroes, and endings?
On my podcast, Popcorn Therapy, I explore movies and television through a therapist's lens, looking at the psychology, mythology, symbolism, and emotional truths hidden inside the stories we love.
Because it's never just a TV show. The stories we're drawn to can reveal something about our fears, desires, relationships, identities, and the way we make meaning of the world around us.
🎙️ Popcorn Therapy is available wherever you get your podcasts.

And if you've been listening, I'd be so grateful if you'd leave a rating or review. It helps more people discover the show and supports the work in a meaningful way.

The Ten of Swords is one of the most intimidating cards in the Tarot.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith version, a figure lies face down, pierced by ten swords. At first glance, it looks like a card of catastrophe. But the Ten of Swords isn't so much about literal death as it is about the end of a way of thinking.
✨ This is part of a new series exploring the stories and symbolism hidden within the Tarot.
And if you enjoy this kind of exploration, my new book The Secret Tales of the Tarot: A Journey Through the Hidden Histories of the Tarot Deck is available for preorder now!

✨ July's Tarot Card of the Month: The Knight of Wands ✨
The Knight of Wands comes in hot—just like July. This is the ultimate card of passion, adventure, confidence, and forward momentum. This knight doesn't sit around waiting for the perfect moment. He follows the spark. He takes the risk. He says yes to the opportunity, the adventure, the idea, the dream.
July is often the hottest, brightest month of the year, brilliant and exciting, a time for travel and adventure, but just like the Knight of Wands, it can also be a little too hot, a little too intense. July often needs to be tempered with rest, cool water, clear thinking, and grounded practices—things the Knight of Wands could really use before he gets himself in trouble.
This card often appears when it's time to stop overthinking and start moving. It reminds us that courage isn't the absence of fear—it's the willingness to act anyway.
Of course, the Knight can also be impatient, impulsive, and a little reckless. Not every exciting idea is a good one. But if you've been waiting for a sign to begin, this card may be it.

My new book, The Secret Tales of the Tarot is not a guide to fortune-telling, it’s a book about story. About why the Fool matters. Why the Tower terrifies us. Why the High Priestess continues to haunt us. Why the suits themselves still carry emotional and symbolic power centuries later.
I wanted to create a way into Tarot that felt imaginative, mythic, and accessible — especially for people who love symbolism, archetypes, psychology, and narrative.
Inside, you’ll travel through the hidden histories and mythological echoes of the cards themselves, with stunning illustrations throughout by .

In researching my new book, Secret Tales of the Tarot: A Journey Through the Hidden Histories of the Tarot Deck, I discovered some incredible sources.
I wanted to know not only what the cards represent, but where they came from. What are the mythologies, folktales, and histories of this occult artefact we're obsessed with today? Here are the books that helped me answer those questions:
1. The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination by Robert M Place: a fantastic resource that goes through the actual history of the Tarot from the playing card deck in the 1400s and the many religious and philosophical systems that influenced them all the way up to the occult understanding that we get with the Rider-Waite-Smith version in 1909.
2. 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Po***ck: A classic — this book brings in deep thought and exploration of the images and their symbols, including the kind of archetypal thinking that can bring Tarot into the realm of psychology.
3. The Book of Thoth: Aleister Crowley's perspective on the Tarot from a rejected member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a ceremonial magician, and the creator of his own religion, channeled via a messenger of the gods. Crowley sees the Tarot as the ancient Egyptian artefact known as the Book of Thoth, a Book of Everything in a secret language gifted to humanity by Thoth, the Egyptian god of knowledge.
4. The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Waite: Waite's notes on Tarot and the individual cards — interesting but only somewhat useful, as we don't get Pamela Colman Smith's perspective in the writing. Waite comes through the writing as wise, but also cranky and judgmental.
5. Llewellyn's Complete Book of the Rider-Waite Tarot by Sasha Graham: A book obsessed with the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck filled with images, symbolism, and a little bit of history.
