Meet Our Therapist Wednesday: Jessica Thomas 🌿

This week, we’re introducing Jessica Thomas, BA, SSW, RSSW, one of New Mindset Therapy’s dedicated Child & Youth Therapists.

Jessica brings experience from community mental health, hospital and school-based settings, and is currently completing her Master’s in Counselling as she continues to expand her clinical knowledge and skills.

Her work focuses on supporting children, youth and families navigating:

• Anxiety and depression
• Emotional regulation
• Grief and loss
• Trauma
• Self-esteem and confidence
• Family challenges
• Life transitions

Jessica incorporates play-based, creative and expressive approaches into therapy, recognizing that children do not always communicate what they are experiencing through words alone.

Her style is calm, approachable and developmentally attuned, creating space for children to feel safe enough to express themselves, build skills and better understand their emotions.

Jessica is also bilingual in English and French and provides in-person support from our Cornwall office.

Sometimes progress begins when a child finally feels understood rather than corrected.

If your child or teen could benefit from some additional support as the new school year begins, our intake team can help determine the right fit.

📢 A Friendly Insurance Reminder

We’re now well into the year, which means some clients may be getting closer to their annual insurance limits.

Please take a moment to check your remaining counselling or psychotherapy coverage with your insurance provider. With over 400 appointments each month, our administrative team is unable to monitor the individual limits and balances of every client’s benefit plan.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Clients are responsible for keeping track of their available coverage.
• Insurance companies may decline a claim once your annual maximum has been reached.
• Our system cannot coordinate two insurance plans. Once your primary plan is exhausted, we may no longer be able to offer direct billing and you may need to submit receipts to your secondary insurer yourself.
• Any portion not covered by insurance remains the client’s responsibility.

We know insurance can be confusing, and our admin team will always help where they can. We simply ask for patience and kindness as they work hard to manage hundreds of claims each month. 💙

Thank you for helping us keep the process running smoothly!

Did you know? 👀
Independence can sometimes look like resistance.

Questioning rules, wanting more privacy and forming their own opinions are often normal parts of adolescent development.

This shift can create tension, but it does not mean your values have been lost or that you have failed as a parent.

You have spent years building the foundation. Now comes the difficult part: offering guidance, holding appropriate boundaries and allowing your teenager enough space to show you what they have learned. 🌸

Sometimes, you really do have to sit back and watch what you created. 😄

Need support adjusting your parenting approach for the teenage years?

Parent coaching is available at New Mindset Therapy. 🎯🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

Not sure if therapy is covered under your workplace benefits? It’s worth a second look. Many extended health plans include mental health support, and your coverage may be better than you think.

At New Mindset Therapy, we make using your benefits as simple as possible. We offer direct billing with several major insurance providers, including Canada Life, Sun Life, Manulife, Medavie, and Blue Cross, meaning that when your plan allows it, we can submit eligible claims directly on your behalf.

We also have several therapists registered as NIHB providers and able to work with additional benefit programs, helping more people access therapy through the coverage available to them.

If you’re employed, take a few minutes to check your benefits. Look for coverage for social workers; you may have hundreds or even thousands of dollars available each year that you’re not using.

Then let us help with the rest.

✨ We’re Looking for a Child & Family Therapist✨

New Mindset Therapy is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced therapist who genuinely loves working with children and families- someone who brings skill, warmth, curiosity, accountability, cultural humility, and a commitment to excellent clinical care.

We’re looking for someone who is especially comfortable working with young children, including children experiencing anxiety, emotional dysregulation, ADHD/ASD-related needs, behavioural concerns, attachment challenges, family stress, and parenting concerns.

Our ideal clinician values excellence over simply filling a schedule. You take your clinical work seriously, seek consultation when needed, remain open to feedback, continue developing your skills, and believe that good therapists never stop learning.

We also place a strong value on cultural awareness and culturally responsive care. We are especially interested in clinicians who have education, training, or meaningful professional experience related to Indigenous history, culture, intergenerational trauma, and the impacts of colonization and residential schools.

We are not looking for someone who simply checks a box around cultural competency. We want a clinician who approaches culture with humility, curiosity, respect, and an understanding that effective therapy must consider the child's broader historical, systemic, family, and community context.

What we offer:

• $90–$100 per session
• Approximately 8–12 clients per week
• Flexible independent-contractor schedule
• Established referral stream
• Your intake is completed for you — clients are thoughtfully screened and matched before they reach your schedule
• Administrative and billing support
• Furnished professional office in downtown Cornwall
• Parking available
• Consultation and clinical supervision available
• Opportunities for continued professional development
• A collaborative, supportive team of experienced mental-health professionals
• An established and trusted private-practice environment

The goal is simple:

Walk in. Do excellent therapy. Leave.

You don't need to build a website, market yourself, chase referrals, manage intake calls, or run an entire private practice to enjoy the flexibility and earning potential of private work.

We are especially interested in clinicians with previous experience or advanced training in areas such as:

• Children's mental health
• Play-based approaches
• ADHD and autism/neurodivergence
• Parenting support and coaching
• Attachment
• Trauma-informed care
• Family work
• Emotional and behavioural regulation
• Indigenous cultural safety and culturally responsive practice

Applicants must be registered with an Ontario regulatory college where psychotherapy falls within their scope of practice. Graduate-level education is preferred, although significant relevant experience, specialized training, and demonstrated clinical competence will also be considered.

Most importantly, we are looking for the right person, not simply someone to fill a vacancy.

If you believe in high-quality care, accountability, continued learning, cultural humility, collaboration, and doing this work exceptionally well, we would love to hear from you.

It’s kinda chic that New Mindset’s greatest strength has always been the incredible people who choose to be part of it. ✨

Different backgrounds. Different areas of expertise. Different personalities and approaches.

But the same commitment to doing really good work, treating people with care, and continuing to grow.

Building New Mindset has given me a lot to be proud of, but this team will always be the top of that list. 💙💛

Mental health isn’t only about what happens when things fall apart.

Sometimes the first signs are much quieter.

You’re not sleeping like you used to.
You’re more irritable than usual.
You’ve started pulling away from people.
Things you normally enjoy feel like effort.
You’re functioning, but you’re always “on.”

One of the reasons conversations about mental health matter is because support doesn’t have to begin at a breaking point. Prevention means noticing the changes, checking in with yourself, and taking your well-being seriously before life becomes overwhelming.

Mental health is health. And taking care of it can start long before there’s a crisis. 💙
