Many beaches from Nanaimo to Campbell River on Vancouver Island’s east coast have staging salmon, but finding them can be tricky. Experienced fly anglers often keep journals to remember which beaches are most productive. Still, there are no guarantees because the weather can change where the salmon are. This unpredictability is part of what makes fishing exciting—the hunt, the discovery, the stalk, and finally, the catch.

I prefer the 8wt because it allows for quicker landings, which supports safer salmon releases. It also offers greater casting distance in challenging conditions, including wind, waves, and debris.
