How much is horse board ?
Let me break it down for you in business terms as I like to be clear !
This is based on Vancouver Island - British Columbia - Canada.

$850 is the going board rate -
What does this actually mean .

What is the going rate for hay - local hay $15 a bale $22 for off island hay
How many bale a month does a horse eat - approx 25 if you feed medium- my large horses eat 30 a month .

Let’s be easy and base on $15 a bail . 25 bails a month

$375 in hay total for the month .

Supplements and grain $100 a month on the light side -

$475 in cost for food
This leaves

$375 - left over for labour- your ring you use - the harrow we use - the gas for themachine to harrow - the stalls your horse lives in.

If we just broke it down for labour @ $17 with $375 an hour that leaves 22 hours total- if we were to hire someone for only 22 hours - the horse would starve .

Horses are fed , Waters’s filled and cleaned - body and health checked - cared for 3-4 times a day. Not to mention their stall cleaning !:)

In order for a boarding facility to break even on wage labour ONLY the facility would need 8 horses boarded at a facility .
This is ONLY to pay the wage of a full time person to care for your horse .
