And we’re off! Day four of the Valor Rescue and Elevated Safety Urban Rigging and Rescue program is in full swing. So grateful for the incredible locations the students are able to train at, giving students a much more realistic experience than the traditional NFPA style training.

✨ Task Update ✨

At approximately 10:50 p.m Wednesday August 12th, Penticton & District Search & Rescue was tasked to assist a stranded motorist on Big Meadow Lake Road.

The subject was attempting to travel from Kelowna to Penticton in a low-clearance vehicle and became stuck on this 4x4 route.

Our team safely located and assisted the subject, who was ultimately returned to Penticton around 1am Thursday morning.

Once again, we want to remind everyone travelling between Kelowna and Penticton that Big Meadow Lake Road and Chute Lake Road are 4x4 routes and are not suitable for regular passenger cars.

Please do not travel these roads without 4x4 vehicle and experience.

If you are comfortable travelling on gravel roads, the 201 is an option and drivers should be prepared and comfortable with those conditions.

If you are looking to stay on paved roads, the safest options are:
• Hwy 33 → Rock Creek → Hwy 3 → Princeton
• Hwy 3 → Princeton → Hwy 97C

Please choose your route based on your vehicle and your comfort level.

A route that looks shorter on a map isn't necessarily the safest or easiest way through.

Plan ahead, know your route, and please don't put yourself, or our volunteers, in a situation that could have been avoided.

✨ Task Update ✨

At approximately 1:30 AM August 9th, PenSAR was tasked to assist a stranded motorist attempting to travel from Kelowna to Penticton via backroads.

Two teams were deployed from different directions to reach the vehicle’s coordinates. The vehicle had become stuck in terrain that was ultimately impassable, even our SAR vehicle was unable to continue along the route.

One team continued on foot toward the subject, while the second team was also forced to turn around due to the conditions on their route.

With Highway 97 currently closed due to the ongoing fires, we are seeing navigation apps and maps directing people onto backroads as alternate routes. Please don’t assume that a route suggested by your GPS is safe, passable, or appropriate for your vehicle.

If you're considering travelling a backroad, especially during an active wildfire situation:
- Research the route ahead of time
- Check current road and fire conditions
- Make sure your vehicle is appropriate for the terrain
- Don't rely solely on your GPS to determine whether a route is safe or passable

Thankfully, this call had a good outcome. The subject was safely handed over to family at approximately 4:20 AM.

Please stay safe, make informed decisions, and remember: a line on a map doesn't necessarily mean there's a road you can safely drive.

✨Task Update ✨

As the fire response moved into a third operational period at 4:00 PM, PenSAR members continued supporting evacuation efforts in the Summerland area.

We were grateful to have mutual aid teams from Oliver-Osoyoos SAR, Grand Forks SAR and Rossland SAR alongside us, helping keep resources available as the situation continued to evolve.

Around 8:00 PM, PenSAR was stood down for the night. New evacuation alerts remained alerts, as per BC Wildfire Service, and our teams were able to return home and stand by for further tasking.
