The space between effort and ease.
Over the past few weeks at Yoga Journey, we’ve been exploring balance—not simply the ability to stand on one leg, but balance as a quality we cultivate.
Yoga Sutra II.46 offers us a beautiful framework:
Sthira Sukham Āsanam
Āsana is steady and easeful.
Sthira is steadiness, stability and grounding.
Sukha is ease, spaciousness and comfort.
When balance feels uncertain, our instinct is often to try harder—to tighten, grip and concentrate. But effort alone is not necessarily stability.
Sthira without sukha can become rigidity. Sukha without sthira can become collapse.
The practice is learning to find the appropriate relationship between the two.
Perhaps balance isn’t a fixed state at all. Perhaps it is our ability to notice when we’ve moved away from centre and make the next intelligent adjustment.
This week, consider:
Where could I soften? Where could I become more steady?
Join us over the coming weeks as we continue to explore balance experientially through āsana, pranayama and attention.
Come to class. Bring your curiosity. Practise balance. ✨
