The Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club

Where did the summer go? It's the last month of our outdoor season (but we'll tell you about winter short mat bowling soon) and we have four tournaments left. Two open tournaments and two club tournaments.

The MacCoubrey Funeral Home open pairs is usually our last tournament of the year but we have brought it forward by one week this year and it will be played on Thursday September 3rd. Thank you to MacCoubrey Funeral Home for sponsoring this tournament. They are one of our longest running sponsors.

The tournament was rained out last year. The last time it was played was in 2024 when Martin Foxhall and Rick Lyons won it. Martin will be playing on Thursday but not Rick.

Should be a great day with a lot of excellent bowlers playing

At the beginning of the season Jan Skillen and John Saunders took on the task of restarting our Youth Program. It started with a schools program and nearly 350 students came to that. Everyone took home a leaflet about the Youth Program and as a result we had 29 kids sign up.. The program ran twice a week through July and August and finished on August 27th with a 4321 tournament, cake and ice cream and awards.

Thanks to the Ontario Lawn Bowls Association for their sponsorship as part of the "Future Champions Roll Here" program.

The kids had a great time and over two months showed a big improvement in skill levels. In the 4321 tournament they were not helped by the coaches. They had to decide their own lines/weight and which way to draw. And they had to measure where necessary.

We hope to see them back again next year plus some new kids.

Ron and Truly Milligan were stalwarts of the Cobourg club and their children, Dan and Sharyl Ann Milligan started an open triples in their memory several years ago. Dan’s business, MVP Sports, used to be the sponsor of the tournament. Sarah van Steijn has taken over the business and trades as vS Sports. Sarah has kindly continued sponsorship of the tournament.

Fourteen teams competed this year. Last year’s winners could not defend the trophy as two of them were unavailable.

After two rounds there were four unbeaten teams. The top two scoring teams were from Cobourg. Bill Arthur, Sheri Perkins and Nan Hendren are all Cobourg members. Peter Stuart-Sheppard was joined by Lindsay members Rhys and Tracey Warren. They played one another and Peter’s team came out on top to win the trophy.

The other two game winners were Rick Barnard’s Campbellford team and Curtis Wartman’s Kingston team. There was a close finish to that game and Rick prevailed to take second place.

There was also a prize for two of the less successful teams competing in the tournament. Dan Milligan (aka The Delivery Doctor) will be giving them a complimentary team coaching session.

Another busy weekend for Cobourg bowlers. On Saturday we host an open triples tournament. This is the Ron and Trudy Milligan Memorial tournament and this year it is being sponsored by vS Sports. Thank you for your support.

There will be new winners this year. Terry Bradshaw, Al Bell and Ron Kinsey were the 2025 winners but two from that team (Terry and Al) are playing elsewhere.

Al Bell, Jacob Hyatt, Lynn Bryans and Lori Wills will be in Port Perry competing in the District 14 Novice Singles Playdowns. This is a qualifier for the Ontario Championships being held in Belleville on September 19 and 20th

Before the tournament started the Rotary Club of Cobourg presented the club witha $3,000 donation to help us buy new club bowls. Pictured with the cheque are Rotarians Helen Lackey and Tracey Berry, flanking Rotary President Sam Miron.

There were 10 ladies teams and 9 men's. They were split into two groups of five (ladies) and one group of five and one of four (men's).

Every group played a round robin. The format was two sets of four ends. There were some tight games with both teams winning a set each which meant lots of extra tie breaker ends.

At the end of the round robin the top teams in each group played each other to decide first and second. The teams that were second played to decide third and fourth.

In the ladies the top two teams were Nan Hendren and Dana Williams and Carol Dewey and Ann Leahey. Nan and Dana took the honours to finish in first place. In the men's competition Tom and Ken Bevan defeated Bill Arthur and Ralph Stoffers.
