AbbyPD Increases E-Kick Scooter Education and Enforcement Efforts

Abbotsford, BC – September 1st, 2026 – As students prepare to return to the classroom, traffic volumes on Abbotsford roadways are expected to increase significantly. With the start of the new school year approaching, the Abbotsford Police Department is reminding parents that electric kick scooters (e-scooters) are not permitted on public roads, sidewalks, pathways, or parks anywhere within the City of Abbotsford. Their use is restricted to private property.

E-scooters can pose severe dangers and are becoming increasingly common in our community. In the event of a collision, they can lead to catastrophic injuries or worse. Education and enforcement efforts are now underway to remind parents and kids that Abbotsford is not part of the Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project in B.C. and riding one can result in a $109 fine.

Residents can expect to see enforcement efforts stepped up at local parks and other places where these e-scooters are often seen in operation; signage and posters have also been distributed around the city and at local schools to ensure the community is informed on the rules of the road with these devices.

AbbyPD is encouraging parents to learn about the proper use and legal considerations of these products before allowing their children to ride them. Data from the Canadian Pediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP), indicates there were 10 youth deaths in Canada in 2025 related to micromobility devices, including 26 hospitalizations lasting more than two days and 12 ICU admissions.

With more children and youth travelling to and from school, officers will be focusing on preventing injuries and keeping our roads and sidewalks safe for all who use them.
