The Fraser River's dominant sockeye run has collapsed this year, falling so far below expectations that commercial fishers will get no opening and some First Nations food, social and ceremonial fisheries have closed earlier than expected.
Marine mammals could be at play

According to associate professor Murdoch McAllister at the University of B.C. Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, another problem has potentially been identified through recent and ongoing analysis.

“We’ve done a very thorough analysis of factors impacting salmon populations. The stats show the biggest factor … is seal and sea lion predation,” said McAllister.

Since seals were protected under Canada’s Marine Mammal Regulations in the 1970s, their populations in the Strait of Georgia has grown to 50,000 in recent years.

McAllister said First Nations no longer cull seals and sea lions on the West Coast, and public perception of a seal hunt has so far prevented the policy option from reaching serious discussion.

In 1970 DFO counted about 5,000 Steller sea lions off B.C.’s coast, while the peak population in 2017 was estimated to be 52,000.

McAllister said the average sea lion eats 18 kilograms of seafood per day.

“The biggest colonies are on the northern tip of Vancouver Island where the sockeye come around the corner. They take in 400,000 tonnes of fish or more. It doesn’t take a big percentage of sockeye to have an impact,” McAllister said.

“It’s a management choice. It’s a societal choice. People love to see baby seals, they’re so cute. And there is ecotourism.

“Maybe people don't want as much salmon but want seals and sea lions? But given what our studies are saying, we can’t have it both ways,” said McAllister.

Due to the cooler, rainy weather, we are opening up the Chase Fish and Game Range to the members and their guests.

Public Safety Extends Amnesty Period until after Supreme Court Ruling

"In March 2026, the Supreme Court of Canada agreed to hear an appeal challenging the May 2020 prohibition of assault-style fi****ms. In light of this, the Amnesty Orders have been extended and set to expire 90 days following the date the Supreme Court of Canada renders its decision, which is expected next year. By extending the amnesty period, the Government is providing certainty to individual owners and businesses that they will continue to be protected from criminal liability while the Supreme Court hears the appeal and renders its decision."
