🎬 Beyond the Trails: Scene 2 – It All Starts with a Truckload of Sawdust
You may notice piles of sawdust while cruising our trails. It might not look like much, but it hides a “cool” secret.

Each spring, we store snow under thick layers of sawdust. This natural insulation preserves the snow until it’s uncovered in the fall and spread onto the Frozen Thunder trail to support early-season cross-country ski and biathlon training – weeks before nature’s first snowfall.

It’s one of many behind-the-scenes efforts that keep year-round recreation possible in our provincial park.

🍓 Berry Season = Bear Season 🐻
As black bears prepare for winter, they enter a period of intense feeding called hyperphagia, consuming up to 20,000 calories a day—about 25 hamburgers' worth of food! Berries like these wild strawberries are one of their most important natural food sources.
While fruit-bearing shrubs are uncommon on many of our trails, bears may still travel through the area in search of food. Please stay alert, make noise, carry bear spray and know how to use it, and practice your bear awareness skills.
📞 Always report wildlife sightings to the Kananaskis Emergency Services at 403-591-7755
Help us keep both people and bears safe this summer.

🎬 Beyond the Trails: Scene 1 – Happy Trails
Follow along as we go Beyond the Trails in a series of posts sharing the people, projects, and preparations that keep the Canmore Nordic Centre running in every season.

Great trails don't stay great on their own.

From fallen trees to rain damage and trail wear, keeping the Canmore Nordic Centre’s mountain bike trails in top shape takes a team. Alongside our trail maintenance crew, incredible volunteer groups like Friends of Kananaskis help restore and care for the trails we all enjoy.

These before-and-after photos show their work on the popular Odyssey trail. We're grateful for their dedication to maintaining trails across Kananaskis.

Want to give back to the trails you love? Check out the Friends of Kananaskis to learn more and sign up for a volunteer trail day.
