8 weeks ago I herniated my s1 disk causing glute, hamstring, and calf weakness plus a lot of pain. I wasn’t able to compete at Strongman Corp Ontario provincials which was really sh*tty. Today I went to CANPL Central Canadian Championship with the goal of hitting the m1 qt for Canada Powerlifting nationals next year, qualifying for Ontario Powerlifting provincials for bench only, and also not getting more injured. (I haven’t competed in powerlifting since nationals in 2024 so my qts are all about to expire).

Squats were 3/3 started light to make sure I didn’t bomb out if I got hurt. I could wear knee sleeves still because they activate my calf so just raw dogged it.
Ended with 230kg

Bench was also 3/3. Since doing strongman for the past year I haven’t been benching much so to hit 162.5kg was pretty good.

Deadlifts I pulled what I needed to for my 580kg total (lowest total I have got since I started powerlifting 😞)

Overall centrals was successful with coaching 7 athletes over the 4 days and competing while coaching one today was a new experience. Thanks to Joey MacDonagh and Jolan Taylor for letting me warm up with your athletes. Also thanks to Make Your Mark Fitness, the refs, and volunteers for making this meet run smoothly.

Lastly thanks to Brook Bennie from Active Relief Centre for helping me through the recovery process to get me to this point.

Chris Almond with a 🥉 place finish CANPL Central Canadian Championship.

Squats have been a struggle with depth so we dropped his opener to make sure he was good. Second attempt moved better than the first but unfortunately depth just wasn’t there on the 3rd. 215kg/222.5kg/232.5kg 2/3

Bench was also 2/3, 160kg/167.5kg/172.5kg.

Deadlifts is his lift. The plan was to pull over 317.5kg/700lb this meet (pulled 320/705 in prep). After going 290kg and 305kg I was looking to see placing and Chris was in 🥉. I originally loaded 310kg for the podium spot but after another athlete hit their deadlift to tie on total and bump Chris to 4th I changed his 3rd attempt to for the win on total. It was a solid pull to earn his place on the podium.

I was also competing in the same session so running back and forth between warm ups and his attempts was a new experience lol.

Thanks to Joey MacDonagh and Dave Smolen for helping get him warmed up.

Judith had a fall and hurt her back 5 days out from this meet but needed to have a total at CANPL Central Canadian Championship to get Canada Powerlifting nationals. We decided to drop her attempts on squat and dead’s. Bench she was able to match her pb on her second 37.5kg. We went to 40kg and just missed it. 4 weeks out from provs so we’ll get it there.

Very solid 8/9 day for Xavi in his first meet in the open -74kg at CANPL Central Canadian Championship .

Squats went really well going 3/3. 197.5kg (2.5kg pr) was the most we could get on the day with a 7 lifter flight turn around times were very fast.

Bench was more of the same 3/3 135kg (2.5kg pr)

Deadlifts were 2/3 215kg was 2.5kg under her best but we know what needs work moving forward so I expect this lift to go up.

Total 547.5kg (10kg pr)

Looking forward to building for a while and see where we end up next meet.

First CANPL Central Canadian Championship done for Georgette

Squats were not going well prep, despite going much better on meet day they were still way under her potential. We opened with 90kg to safely get on the board then jump to 105kg for an easy second, but unfortunately missed the third 120kg on depth.

Bench went really well 3/3 with an easy third 85kg (2.5kg pr).

Deadlifts also went 3/3 with 170kg (5kg pr).

Very strong end to the meet! Well keep building the momentum heading into provincials!
