There are a lot of layers involved in a cesarean birth, but once surgery begins, the time from the first incision to meeting your baby is often just a few minutes!
(thanks to the Prenatal Yoga Centre for this great illustration of the layers involved)
In Calgary, about 30% of babies are born by cesarean section. For first-time moms with no major risk factors, the rate is lower, around 15–20%.
Even if you're hoping and preparing for a vaginal birth, there's a reasonable chance your baby could be born by C-section. Knowing what happens before and during surgery, who will be in the room and what recovery looks like, can make the experience feel much less intimidating if your birth takes an unexpected turn.
While some cesarean births are planned, most happen during labour. Only about 1% are true emergencies and our hospital staff is well prepared to provide safe, timely care when every minute counts.
Here in Calgary, Labour & Delivery nurses are with you in the operating room, helping make your baby's birth as calm, supportive, and family-centred as possible.
Next week in our prenatal yoga classes, we will be talking about cesarean births. Whether you're planning a vaginal birth or a scheduled C-section, come with your questions and let’s learn together!
🧡 See you on the mat soon!

Baby news is the best, I love receiving these messages! This new mama was so committed to preparing her body and mind for her birth experience that she showed up to class consistently at least 2-3 times a week for months and attended every workshop we offered. I am so happy for her! (and a little extra excited that her baby and I share the same birthday) Welcome to motherhood! 🥰

Back in Calgary and hooray, the snow is gone!
I hope you and your little ones are all doing well, I have missed you!
Sweet newborn snuggles and grandkid hugs filled my soul over the last couple of weeks. It was so hard to leave and I truly wish I could have bottled all those precious moments and brought them home with me. I’d be sniffing that bottle non-stop!
I’m incredibly grateful to Breanna and Erin for covering some of the classes while I was away and I’m so excited to begin teaching again and reconnecting with all of you. A room full of beautiful pregnant bellies really is the best…
The Monday/Wednesday evening prenatal yoga classes over the next few weeks are full but remember to add yourself to the waitlist as spots may open up more last minute. Friday and Saturday afternoon classes mostly still have space.
I can’t wait to see you on the mat soon!
With light, love and gratitude,
Irena

Sending lots of love this weekend to all mothers. Those with small kids, big kids, kids far away, expectant mamas and special love to those who can only carry their babies in their hearts instead of in their arms. I see you.
No matter how old you are, you never stop needing your mom. This year is the 2nd Mother’s Day without my own mother - walking past the Mother’s Day cards in the store still feels really heavy on my heart. I miss having a mom. Sending lots of love to others in similar situations 🧡
I hope your day is filled with Light, Love and Gratitude. Thinking of you!

I so appreciate each and every one of you who take the time to write a review and share your experience at our little studio. Google reviews really help expectant and new mamas find our classes and I feel so blessed that I get to keep sharing my passion for not only Yoga, but also all things pregnancy, birth and motherhood related. I look forward to each and every class I teach and it warms my heart you keep showing up! (or maybe it’s because of the tea and chocolate, haha!)
Anyway, thank you…🙏🏻🧡
