How to Glass Effectively

Glassing is the practice of using binoculars or a spotting scope to carefully scan an area for wildlife—especially in open or difficult-to-see terrain. Instead of walking through an area looking for animals, hunters can use optics to observe from a distance.

Here are a few tips for more effective glassing:
'
• Start with your naked eye. Get familiar with the terrain before looking through your optics.
'
• Work systematically. Divide the landscape into sections and slowly scan each one rather than jumping around randomly.

• Focus on edges. Pay close attention to timber lines, meadows, brush, ridges and other habitat transitions.

• Look for movement. An ear flick, tail movement or slight change in vegetation can reveal an animal that blends into its surroundings.

• Be patient. Animals may be standing still or partially hidden. Give each area plenty of time before moving on.

• Take advantage of good lighting. Early morning and evening can provide useful conditions for spotting movement and animals in open country.

• Look for parts, not just the whole animal. An antler, ear, leg or patch of fur may be easier to spot than an entire animal.

The key to effective glassing? Slow down, stay systematic and let your optics do the work.

The American Pika (Ochotona princeps) may look like a small mouse, but it's actually more closely related to rabbits and hares than to rodents. Found in the rocky alpine regions of western Canada, these tiny mammals are perfectly adapted to life in cool mountain environments.

• Pikas are only about 15–20 cm long and typically weigh less than 200 grams.
• Instead of hibernating, they spend the summer collecting grasses, flowers, and leaves, creating "haypiles" that dry in the sun and provide food throughout the winter.
• Pikas communicate with sharp, high-pitched calls to warn others of nearby predators or defend their territory.

Unlike many mountain animals, pikas are extremely sensitive to heat. They can overheat after just a short time in temperatures above 25°C, which is why they live in cool, high-elevation habitats among rockslides and talus slopes. As temperatures rise, many pika populations are being forced to move to higher elevations where suitable habitat becomes increasingly limited.

If you hunt in Canada, you've probably heard the term WMU, but what does it actually mean?

A Wildlife Management Unit is a geographic area used by provincial governments to manage wildlife populations and set hunting regulations.
WMUs help determine:

✔️ Hunting seasons
✔️ Bag limits
✔️ Weapon restrictions
✔️ Draws and licences
✔️ Species-specific regulations

Knowing your WMU is one of the most important steps to hunting legally and responsibly.

With CLAS, you can view WMU boundaries directly on the map and quickly access the regulations that apply to the area you're hunting.

Check out more about WMUs here: https://blog.clas.app/understanding-wildlife-management-units/

Did You Know?

When transporting a non-restricted firearm in Canada, it must generally be unloaded.

If you leave a firearm in an unattended vehicle, additional rules apply. Depending on the vehicle, the firearm may need to be stored in a locked trunk or compartment, or kept out of sight in a securely locked vehicle.

Whether you're heading to your hunting area, moving between properties, or wrapping up a day outdoors, taking a few moments to transport your firearm safely helps protect everyone and ensures compliance with federal fi****ms regulations.

Responsible hunting starts long before you take a shot. It begins with safe firearm handling and transportation.
