The wind seems calm. Why aren’t the balloons flying?

Right at the surface, winds may be calm or light. Just above the surface, they can be much stronger or even travelling in a different direction. This rapid change in wind speed or direction is called wind shear, and it can make conditions unsuitable for a balloon flight.

Those stronger winds can also sometimes mix down to the surface unexpectedly, creating challenging launch or landing conditions.

That’s one reason a beautiful, calm morning at the launch field doesn’t necessarily mean conditions are safe to fly.

CBC members were out flying today in Calgary! Shane and Kiss the Sky Balloons flew with the Sundance Balloon and the Remax balloon! It was a beautiful morning

We're looking for Launch Field Volunteers for the Heritage Inn International Balloon Festival!

Launch Field Volunteers help keep things moving as balloon teams arrive and depart. If conditions are flyable, you'll help direct balloon vehicles onto the launch field and may assist with traffic so chase vehicles can get on and off the field easily.

It's usually less than a two-hour commitment, you'll have a great view of the action, and no ballooning experience is required.

Douglas Robson - "Prairie Dawn"

Shane Lockyer and Karl Schultz were up up and away alongside the Re/Max balloon this morning for a flight over the city! Karl is also working on his instructors rating and is making good progress. Couple items left to tick off the check list and he should be ready to submit the application.
