Sure, it's nice to lift a little more weight, improve your fitness, or see changes in the mirror.
But those things aren't the end goal.
They're what allow us to do more of the things we love.
This photo was taken on a family hike during our recent camping trip to the Sunshine Coast. Between mountain biking, hiking to incredible viewpoints, swimming, exploring, and (of course) refueling with a little gelato, we were reminded why we spend so much time helping people build strength and conditioning.
Not so they can be "good at the gym."
So they can say yes to adventures.
So they have the energy to enjoy full days outdoors.
So they can keep up with their kids as they grow... and hopefully one day, their grandkids too.
The gym isn't the destination.
It's the preparation for everything else life has to offer.
When you build strength, endurance, balance, and resilience, everyday life gets easierโand the experiences you love become even more enjoyable.
That's why we train.
Not just to add years to your life...
But to add more life to your years.
๐ช What adventure are you training for?

It's a question we hear from time to time.
The answer? Because you're not all the same person.
Sometimes you'll notice someone beside you doing the exact same exercise. Other times, you'll be doing something completely different.
Why?
Because your program is built around you.
โ๏ธ Your goals
โ๏ธ Your injury history
โ๏ธ Your current strength and fitness level
โ๏ธ How many days per week you're training with us
โ๏ธ What other activities you're doing outside the gym (golf, hockey, running, pickleball, cyclingโyou name it!)
One client might be working on TRX Rows to improve upper-body strength, posture, and shoulder health, while another is focusing on Bodyweight Lunges to build single-leg strength, balance, and stability.
Neither exercise is "better."
They're simply the right exercise for that person, on that day.
One of the biggest advantages of our small group training model is that everyone receives expert coaching, while following a program designed specifically for their needs. Sometimes your workouts will overlap with others in your group. Sometimes they won't.
That's not a flaw in the system...
It's exactly how individualized coaching should work.
Because the best training program isn't the one everyone else is doing.
It's the one that's designed to help you move better, get stronger, and achieve your goals.
๐ช Personalized programming. Small group energy. Results that matter.

We're both excited and a little sad to announce that Maria will be leaving us as she begins a full-time position as an Ultrasound Technician with MedRay.
Maria's positive attitude, professionalism, and welcoming smile have been a wonderful part of our Saturdays, and she'll be greatly missed by both staff and clients.
We wish her every success in her new career and hope that once she settles into her new role, we may occasionally see her back helping with admin coverage from time to time.

๐ We'd like to officially welcome Ronald Vadakkan to the Performance Institute team!
Ronald is currently completing his Bachelor of Kinesiology at SFU and has been working with us through a paid mentorship program.
From day one, he's impressed us with his work ethic, professionalism, and willingness to learn. In fact, when we found out he was only 18 years old, we were genuinely surprisedโhe carries himself with a level of maturity that's well beyond his years.
Over the coming months, you'll see Ronald taking on an increasing role supporting our coaching team as he continues to develop his skills and experience.
We're excited to be part of his journey and can't wait to see where it leads.
Welcome, Ronald!

Few exercises are as satisfying as a medicine ball slam.
Beyond being a great stress reliever, ball slams offer several training benefits:
๐ฅ Power development
๐ฅ Core coordination
๐ฅ Shoulder mobility
๐ฅ Full-body force production
They teach the body to generate force, transfer it through the core, and express it dynamically.
Plus, after a long day at work, thereโs something therapeutic about throwing a ball into the floor as hard as you can.

Welcome Sean
๐ช Please join us in welcoming Sean Duffield-Matsuo to the Performance Institute team!
Sean brings more than 10 years of coaching experience and recently graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Kinesiology in Neuromechanical and Physiological Sciences.
His background includes working with everyone from competitive athletes to cancer survivors, strength and conditioning coaching in both Japan and Canada, and research in exercise and pain science through the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
Sean has spent his first couple of weeks learning our systems and shadowing our coaching team before heading to Japan for a family vacation that was planned long before we hired him. He'll return in late July and hit the ground running.
We're excited for our clients to get to know him!
Welcome, Sean! ๐
