🥋 Why is Conditioning Part of Kyokushin Karate?
In Kyokushin, conditioning is part of preparing the body for the physical demands of karate and especially Kumite.
Among other things, it includes core and abdominal conditioning — learning to brace and absorb body contact.
The purpose is partly physical — developing the body's ability to handle contact — but also mental. In Kumite, getting hit shouldn't completely disrupt your technique, breathing, composure or willingness to continue.
Kyokushin Kumite involves significant body contact. Conditioning helps students become physically and mentally prepared for that environment.

Mawashi Geri, Aspen, Colorado — Rocky Mountains, 2007.
Some backdrops just make sense. There's real energy in a place like this, and it's hard not to pull from it — mountains have a way of putting you in the right headspace to move. Karate isn't meant to stay boxed inside four walls and a mat.
🥋 Barrie Karate Kids Diaries — Kyokushin Training Journal
The focus of this class was Balance & Control.
The Barrie Karate Kids started by developing a strong Zenkutsu Dachi stance — first working against each other's resistance, then adding movement and kicks.
The progression was simple, but it got harder with every step:
Push Kick from Zenkutsu Dachi → Mawashi Geri → Yoko Geri — all without putting the kicking leg down.
Along the way, Shihan shared an important lesson: control your leg the same way you control your hands. Lift it, control it, and be able to place it where you want.
Then came the real test — continuous kicking on a timer without putting the leg down. 🔥
This kind of training develops balance, coordination, body control, and the ability to connect techniques naturally.

A fun flow drill from our Adult Kyokushin Karate class in Barrie.
Each person throws one technique — any punch or kick — and the partner immediately responds with one technique of their own.
Then keep going! 😄
No predetermined combinations. You have to react, respond and keep the flow going.

🥋 Low Kick → Check → Counter
A few moments from our Adult Karate Class in Barrie, working on low kick drills.
In this sequence:
1. Step in → lead leg low kick to the inside of the thigh
2. Return to fighting stance → check your partner's low kick
3. Counter with the rear leg
It's not just about throwing the kick. The drill combines attack, defense, timing and counterattack.

Throwing kicks in the air is easy. Saturday sparring is where you find out what actually works.
This is where everything comes together. How’s your stamina holding up after five rounds? Does your technique stay sharp when you're tired, or does your guard drop the second you start breathing heavy?
Our Saturday sparring in Mississauga is built to be safe, controlled, and genuinely fun. Teens and adults share the floor, test what they worked on all week, take some solid body shots, and help each other get better. Zero egos, no one trying to take heads off, just good hard rounds.
If you’ve been wanting to test yourself on the mats and see what real training feels like, come try a free trial class with us.
Listen to Senpai Max’s words from his final training session before heading off to university.
From stepping into the dojo as a 7-year-old white belt to earning his black belt and becoming an assistant instructor, his 11-year journey represents what Kyokushin is truly about—humility, respect, and pushing through the days you want to quit.
Senpai Mici and I, along with our entire dojo family, couldn't be prouder of the young man you’ve become. The dojo will always be your home.

Last night was a bittersweet evening at Barrie Dojo as we marked Senpai Max’s final week with us before he heads off to university.
Having Max train with us for over 11 years—watching him grow from his very first day as a white belt into an exceptional black belt and assistant instructor—has been an incredible privilege. Senpai Mici and I, along with every student and parent in our dojo family, could not be prouder of the martial artist and young man he has become.
Moments like this are why Kyokushin Karate and our dojo matter so much in our community. Beyond the kicks, punches, and conditioning, our real purpose is to help mold strong character, discipline, and integrity in young people—raising them into responsible, compassionate adults who contribute something positive to society. Senpai Max is living proof of that mission. His humility, technical excellence, and dedication to helping others have earned him the deepest respect from all of us.
This isn’t goodbye, just a farewell to this particular chapter. The dojo will always be your home, and you will forever be an esteemed part of the CKMA family.
We wish you all the best in your university journey. Keep training your mind and spirit with the same Kyokushin heart, and we look forward to welcoming you back and share your stories.

Crab Fighting Tournament! 🦀
One of our favorite dojo games! 😄
Starting from a crab squat position, the goal is to push your opponent until they touch the floor with a hand or until they fall 🤗
And, of course, every fight ends with a handshake.
Having fun together is part of dojo life too! ❤️
