JIU JITSU IS NOT ABOUT JIU JITSU

At Karma Jiu Jitsu we are creating an environment for people to grow, together.

We are giving children a place to meet new friends.

We are giving adults a place to “hang out”.

Jiu jitsu is fun, it is a life skill, but meeting your future best friend, spouse, travel buddy, business partner, etc is even better.

These are the real moments. These are the moments that can’t be staged.

At Karma Jiu Jitsu we make sure you understand why we do the things we do.

If someone isn’t pinning you to the ground, the objective should be simple, stand up!

The problem, we often believe we are being pinned, when in reality we are just being pressured.

Free yours hips.
Build up a solid base.
Stand up!

JIU JITSU IS NOT ABOUT JIU JITSU

A year and nine months ago Karma Jiu Jitsu in Ajax opened its doors to build a community.

Yesterday we awarded our FIRST homegrown blue belt.

This is a huge milestone for both Nikolay and Karma Jiu Jitsu. Most people who start jiu jitsu will NEVER earn their blue belt. A large percentage quit once they get their blue belt. Why is this?

A few reasons
- It takes a long time to learn jiu jitsu and be able to apply it.
- Most people will deal with injuries at some point
- LIFE - most people are hobbyists at best. They show up 1-3 times per week all while dealing with the day-to-day intricacies of life (work, family, children, etc.)

The ones that get their blue belt (and beyond) are not those that are better than anyone. They are simply the ones who keep showing up.

They show up injured.

They show up tired.

They show up consistently.

So the real question is how do you get good at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? How do you get the next belt?

SHOW UP!

Congrats to Nikolay for showing up. Putting in the work and training with intent.

Karma Jiu Jitsu was happy to once again be part of the Town of Ajax Canada Day celebration.

This year we decided to bring the Living Room to the people. Karma Jiu Jitsu welcomed people of all ages to play with toys and sit around for some great conversation.

We had some amazing conversations with the Durham Regional Police Service West Division Police Officers about how to make training more accessible and available to more police.

We are so grateful for the community we continue to build. Thank you to Marilyn Crawford and Rob Cerjanec, MPP for Ajax for making yourself part of the community.

This weekend some of the Karma Jiu Jitsu community participated in the Chico Racing 24 Hour Summer Solstice Race.

It was an incredible experience and it was amazing to see the teens on our team give it there all on multiple 17km laps.

Already looking forward to next year with a bigger group of people.

Welcome to The Living Room

It’s where kids invent games, laugh, and build friendships that last long after class ends.

It’s where parents answer emails, catch up on work, or simply enjoy a coffee while watching their children grow.

It’s where adults who started as training partners become friends, business connections, and family.

A lot of academies have a waiting area.

We have a living room.

Because jiu jitsu is not about jiu jitsu, it’s about belonging.

Come for the classes. Stay for the community.

JIU JITSU IS NOT ABOUT JIU JITSU

One of the questions we get asked most often is: “Will my child be training with other kids at their skill level?”

The answer is yes, but not all the time, and that’s intentional.

One of the most important things we do at Karma Jiu Jitsu is train kids of ALL experience levels, ages, and genders together.

When newer students train with experienced students, they learn faster. They get to see good habits, strong technique, and the culture of helping others firsthand.

At the same time, our experienced students become even better. Anyone can copy a technique, but explaining it to someone else requires true understanding. Teaching forces our kids to think, communicate, and lead.

Training across age groups is equally important. Younger kids get to see what’s possible. They have role models right in front of them. It gives them someone to look up to and reminds them that one day they will be in that position too.

We also believe it is important for girls and boys to train together from an early age. When children are young and similar in size, they learn that training hard, working together, and challenging one another has nothing to do with gender.

During their teenage years boys become bigger and stronger. The girls who have trained alongside them for years don’t suddenly lose confidence. They have spent years learning, drilling, and rolling with boys. It’s normal. It’s familiar. It’s something they’ve always done. That confidence carries forward and helps create strong, capable young women who are comfortable taking on challenges both on and off the mats.

When experienced students get to train with each other, they can raise the level. The intensity increases. The techniques become more complex. They’re not just trying to win rounds, they’re helping each other grow.

This II how strong teams are built. The beginners get better. The leaders get better. The room gets better.

At Karma Jiu Jitsu, we aren’t just building skilled athletes. We’re building teammates, mentors, confident young women, respectful young men, and future leaders.
