The Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) Extended Management Team recently convened a validation meeting for the Harmonisation of African Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation (HAQAA) Phase 3 Self-Assessment Report (SAR), bringing together team members and technical officers from across the organisation.

Held on 25 June 2026 at Grand Aria, the full-day session marked an important step in BQAโ€™s ongoing contribution to the continental quality assurance initiative. The meeting focused on reviewing and validating consolidated chapters of the Self-Assessment Report to ensure accuracy, comprehensiveness, and an evidence-based approach as the report continues to progress through drafting and refinement stages.

The collaborative session enabled managers and technical officers to verify institutional information, clarify key issues, and strengthen the quality and credibility of the report. Participants also shared valuable insights to ensure the report accurately reflects BQAโ€™s systems, practices, and ongoing efforts in quality assurance.

The HAQAA Phase 3 Self-Assessment is a structured review process that enables quality assurance bodies to evaluate how their policies, systems, and practices align with African continental standards for higher education quality assurance.

It supports reflection on institutional strengths, identification of areas for improvement, and the development of evidence-based findings that contribute to continuous improvement and the harmonisation of quality assurance practices across Africa.

As the process continues, BQA remains committed to advancing the development of a comprehensive and credible Self-Assessment Report in line with HAQAA Phase 3 requirements.

Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) recently engaged the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) to strengthen collaboration on the verification, authentication, and evaluation of qualifications used for recruitment, promotions, and staff development within the Public Service.

The engagement showed that verifying the authenticity and equivalence of both local and foreign qualifications is essential to protect Botswana's qualifications system and support informed human resource decisions.

As demand for qualification verification services grows, BQA and DPSM are exploring ways to strengthen cooperation to support merit-based recruitment, career progression, and staff development across Government.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of skills-based recruitment and competency development. BQA shared how Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) can support the recognition of skills and competencies acquired through formal, non-formal, and informal learning, contributing to the development of a competent workforce for national development.

The two organisations pledged their commitment to promoting confidence in qualifications, recognising skills and competencies, and strengthening the integrity of the Public Service.

Botswana Qualifications Authority (BQA) wishes to inform stakeholders and members of the public that the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ofentse Disang, is attending the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Technical Committee on Certification and Accreditation (TCCA) Meeting taking place from 17 to 19 June 2026 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The meeting brings together representatives from SADC Member States responsible for education and training, higher education, qualifications frameworks, quality assurance, certification, accreditation, and regional integration matters. Delegates attending the meeting include officials from Ministries responsible for Education and Higher Education, National Qualifications Framework (NQF) authorities, quality assurance and accreditation bodies, as well as representatives from SADC Secretariat and the European Training Foundation.

The Technical Committee on Certification and Accreditation serves as a key regional platform for advancing cooperation in qualifications recognition, quality assurance, and the harmonisation of education and training systems across the SADC region.

Among other matters, the meeting will focus on validating the revised SADC Qualifications Framework (SADCQF) Policy and Guidelines, reviewing findings from the SADCQF Survey, and discussing progress made by Member States in areas such as National Qualifications Frameworks, quality assurance, micro-credentials, credit accumulation and transfer systems, and recognition of prior learning. The Committee will also consider new regional guidelines, agree on a roadmap for referencing national qualifications frameworks to the SADCQF, and develop implementation priorities for the period 2026โ€“2030.

BQA's participation in the meeting reflects Botswana's continued commitment to regional integration in education and training, strengthening qualifications systems, and promoting the recognition and comparability of qualifications across the SADC region. The outcomes of the meeting are expected to contribute to the enhancement of quality assurance systems and facilitate learner and worker mobility within the region.

During the Acting Chief Executive Officer's absence, normal operations at BQA will continue, and stakeholders will continue to receive services through the Authority's established channels.
