Coaches Refresher Workshop Ends with Focus on Sport Science and Athlete Welfare
The three-day Re Ba Bona Ha (RBBH) and Centres of Sport Excellence (CSE) Coaches Refresher Workshop concluded today at the University of Botswana, bringing together coaches from across the country to strengthen their knowledge and improve the delivery of athlete development programmes.
The second day of the workshop focused on high performance and programme improvement. Coaches took part in sessions on coaching ethics and athlete management, the role of sport science in athlete development, injury prevention, load management, and injury management processes. The day also included discussions on ways to improve the implementation of the RBBH and CSE programmes, with coaches sharing ideas and identifying practical steps to strengthen their work.
Today's final day shifted the focus to athlete welfare, with coaches receiving training in first aid and emergency response in sport. The hands-on sessions highlighted the importance of being prepared to respond to injuries and medical emergencies, ensuring coaches can better protect the health and safety of athletes during training and competition.
The workshop forms part of BNSC's ongoing efforts to equip coaches with the knowledge and practical skills needed to support athlete development and strengthen Botswana's high-performance sport pathway.

BNSC Hosts RBBH & CSE Coaches Capacity-Building Workshop
The Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) has commenced a three-day capacity-building workshop for coaches under the Re Ba Bona Ha (RBBH) and Centre of Sport Excellence (CSE) programmes in Gaborone. The workshop began today and will conclude on Sunday.
When providing an overview of the workshop, Sport Development Manager Mr. Mpho Segakise highlighted its importance in strengthening the country’s coaching capacity and athlete development system. He noted that the workshop is designed to equip coaches with a clear understanding of the modified athlete development pathway while enhancing their coaching knowledge and skills.
The programme focuses on key areas including safeguarding, the Botswana Long-Term Athlete Development framework, anti-doping education, sports science, injury management, and first aid training. These sessions aim to empower coaches with the tools needed to effectively guide athletes from grassroots participation to podium success.
Speaking during the workshop, Director Sports Science Mr. Frederick Kebadiretse expressed appreciation to the coaches for their continued commitment to developing sport in Botswana. He also introduced the Commission’s new Sports Science Department, which will provide additional support to coaches and athletes through scientific approaches to performance and athlete welfare.
He encouraged coaches to remain dedicated, intentional, and exemplary in their work, emphasizing the vital role they play in shaping the future of young athletes and Botswana’s sporting success.
Delivering the closing remarks at the opening session, 30th TAFISA World Congress General Manager, Mr. Thuto Molebatsi, commended the RBBH and CSE coaches for taking the time to attend the workshop. He also highlighted the significance of Botswana hosting the 30th TAFISA World Congress, describing it as a landmark opportunity for the country’s sports sector. He encouraged coaches to take full advantage of the programmes associated with the Congress, including the TAFISA Pathway initiatives.
Mr. Molebatsi concluded by thanking all participants for their commitment and wished them a productive, insightful, and successful workshop.

Team Botswana Unveiled for 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III
The Botswana Tennis Association has officially unveiled Team Botswana ahead of the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III, set to take place from 13–18 July 2026 at the National Tennis Centre in Gaborone.
Welcoming guests, the Botswana Investment & Trade Centre (BITC) Director of Brand Management, Mr. Thuso Palai, highlighted the strategic partnership between BITC, the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) and the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC), which seeks to leverage sport as a vehicle to attract investment into Botswana. He noted that BITC’s partnership with the Botswana Tennis Association for the Billie Jean King Cup is a practical demonstration of that commitment, with support extending to the tournament's opening and closing ceremonies.
Delivering the tournament brief, LOC Chairperson Mr. Nonofo Othusitse confirmed that Botswana is fully prepared to host the event, with facilities, officials, volunteers and players all ready to welcome the 11 participating nations. He also acknowledged the support of partners providing medical, hydration and media services, adding that two sponsors contributing over P250,000.00 each will be announced in the coming days.
Team representative Chelsea Chakanyuka thanked the sponsors, partners and coaches for their unwavering support and called on Batswana to come out in numbers and rally behind the national team as they chase promotion to Africa Group II.

BNSC CONVENES SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING
The Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) today convened a Special General Meeting at Travel Lodge, Gaborone, bringing together the newly appointed BNSC Board Chairperson, Mr. Goitseone Gadifele, BNSC Chief Executive Officer Olebile Sikwane, National Sport Association (NSA) Presidents and representatives, as well as BNSC staff.
The meeting was held to formally initiate the process for the election of National Sport Association (NSA) representatives who will serve on the BNSC Board. While no elections were conducted during the meeting, members were briefed on the legal framework and governance procedures that will guide the process to ensure it is transparent, fair and in line with the BNSC Regulations.
A key outcome of the meeting was the commencement of the process to establish an independent Election Committee. The committee will be responsible for managing all election procedures, including the publication of election guidelines, nomination processes, verification of candidates and the conduct of the elections. Once constituted, the committee will oversee the entire process independently until the election of the NSA representatives is concluded.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to introduce the newly appointed BNSC Board, which will serve a four-year term from 17 June 2026 to 16 June 2030. The Board is chaired by Mr. Goitseone Gadifele and includes Mr. Moeti Godisamang, Ms. Keenese Katisenge, Mr. Tshepo Gopolang Sitale, Ms. Dorothy Tlage-Gaesitsiwe, Mr. Kabo Diamond Moseki, Ms. Atlarelang Solomon, Mr. Tshepo Mafereka and Ms. Mpho Moatshe.
Addressing delegates, Board Chairperson Mr. Gadifele emphasised the importance of good governance and collaboration in strengthening Botswana’s sporting landscape, while BNSC CEO Olebile Sikwane encouraged NSA's to actively participate in the process and uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and integrity.
The Special General Meeting marked the official beginning of the process to elect NSA representatives to the BNSC Board, an important step towards ensuring inclusive representation and strengthening governance within Botswana’s sport sector.

CUCSA Games Gaborone 2026 Officially Open
The 22nd edition of the Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association (CUCSA) Games was officially declared open this evening by the Minister of Higher Education, Honourable Prince Maele, at the University of Botswana Sports Arena.
The opening ceremony brought together student-athletes, university leaders, sports administrators and dignitaries from across Southern Africa in celebration of university sport, regional unity and excellence.
Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairperson Mr. Outule Bale welcomed guests before CUCSA President Mr. Mwape Nshimbi addressed the gathering, encouraging athletes to compete with integrity, respect and sportsmanship while strengthening the bonds of friendship across the region.
The Games were then officially declared open by Honourable Prince Maele.
Delivering the closing remarks, Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) CEO, Mr. Olebile Sikwane, thanked the Government of Botswana for its continued support of sport, noting that sport should be viewed as an investment that drives youth development, social inclusion and economic growth.
The ceremony concluded with the opening volleyball fixture between Botswana and Zambia, officially getting the 2026 CUCSA Games underway.
