The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) expresses its solidarity with the people of Nepal and Tibet following the catastrophic debris avalanche and flash flood that struck the Langtang region on 26 August 2026.

EFG extends its sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and its support to all affected communities.

The event highlights the cascading nature of geological hazards in high-mountain environments and the critical role of geoscience in hazard assessment, monitoring, early warning and disaster risk reduction.

EFG also recognises the importance of sustained investment in geological data, earth observation, scientific institutions and international cooperation to strengthen resilience to future hazards.

EFG is supporting the call to preserve EM-DAT, the International Disaster Database, as it faces an urgent funding crisis following the withdrawal of USAID support.

For decades, EM-DAT has provided authoritative, freely accessible data on disasters and their human and economic impacts. This information supports scientific research, humanitarian action, disaster risk assessment and evidence-based policymaking.

For the geoscience community, its value is particularly significant. Geologists working across academia, industry and public service rely on long-term disaster data to better understand, monitor and mitigate hazards including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and floods.

In a letter addressed to the CRED-EM-DAT Team on behalf of the EFG Board, President David Govoni reaffirmed the Federation’s support for the continued operation and funding of EM-DAT, warning that its loss would create a major gap for the wider scientific and humanitarian community.

EFG encourages its members, National Associations, partner organisations and the wider geoscience community to support the open letter calling for the preservation of this important public resource.

to 23 June, when EFG President David Govoni took part in the conference “Critical Raw Materials: National Strategy, Geo-Resources and the Role of Professionals” at the Chamber of Commerce of Genoa Ordine Regionale dei Geologi della Liguria.

The event brought together academia, industry and the geoscience community to examine how Italy can strengthen its contribution to Europe’s critical raw materials security.

Discussions highlighted the importance of the National Mineral Exploration Programme, stronger geological knowledge, responsible resource development and the use of recognised frameworks such as PERC and UNFC.

David Govoni also stressed the essential role of qualified geoscience professionals, including certified European Geologists (EurGeol), in resource assessment, permitting and sustainable development.

The conference further underlined the importance of circular economy solutions, particularly the recovery of value from mining waste, alongside transparent public engagement to build trust and social acceptance.

Europe’s strategic autonomy will depend not only on identifying resources, but on developing them responsibly, transparently and with the right professional expertise.

The webinar will examine how existing geological data can be revisited to identify overlooked structures, improve interpretation and generate additional value without further drilling.

Led by Elisenda Rodriguez Perez, Senior Technical Solutions Specialist and Geologist at Seequent, the session will address unmodelled splays, forgotten structures, logging inconsistencies and disconnected datasets. It will also present practical examples and a live workflow using Imago → Leapfrog → Driver.

Mining-Tech – 3rd Mining Industry Tech Days 2026 is approaching, bringing the mining and geoscience community together in Ankara from 22 to 24 October at Hacettepe University, Beytepe Campus.

From geological data to mine design.

The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) is pleased to support the 16th IAGOD Quadrennial Symposium, hosted by the International Association on the Genesis of Ore Deposits from August 30 to September 2, 2026, in Porto, Portugal. The symposium will be held at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) under the theme "The Role of Geoscience in the Energy Transition."

The symposium will also feature an Early Career Geoscientists' Programme, an initiative supported through activities sponsored by EFG and the Portuguese Association of Geologists (APG).
