There’s a reason “just decide to change” never actually works. Festinger’s research on cognitive dissonance showed the brain pushes back against any behaviour that contradicts the identity it already holds. Tell yourself “I’m not disciplined,” then go for the run anyway, your brain doesn’t clock that as a win.
It registers friction, because the action and the self-story don’t match.
But there’s a second half to this that most people never hear. Bem’s self-perception theory found the relationship runs both ways: we don’t only behave according to our identity, we form our identity by watching what we actually do.
Which means every small thing you follow through on isn’t just a task ticked off. It’s proof your brain files away — I’m the kind of person who does this.
