You probably didn’t expect to see tennis balls at CrossFit.

But there’s more going on here than trying not to send one flying across the gym at 6am šŸ˜‚

Hand-eye coordination, balance, accuracy, agility, unilateral stability, trunk and shoulder control, reaction and spatial awareness.

All disguised as a warm-up.

Add a moving tennis ball and suddenly you’re trying to hold your position, control your body and react to something unpredictable at the same time.

We could warm up by moving through a list of exercises without thinking too much about it.

Or we can give people something to solve. A position to control. Something to react to. Someone else to work around.

Because CrossFit has never just been about how much you can lift or how quickly you can finish a workout.

Strength and conditioning are the obvious parts, but coordination, balance, accuracy and agility matter too.

The goal is broad, general and inclusive fitness. Not just being good at a few things, but becoming more capable at whatever gets thrown at you.

Sometimes that looks like heavy barbells and hard workouts.

Sometimes it looks like a room full of adults crawling around after tennis balls before the sun comes up. And the fact that everyone is laughing while they do it is a pretty good bonus.

Training should make you more capable. It’s even better when you forget you’re training for a minute.

This is 6am at CrossFit Bass Coast!

There’s probably more to CrossFit than you think.

Double trouble! Happy Birthday B Reijn T & Kane’o šŸŽ‰

Quick with the banter, always up for a laugh, and know exactly when it’s time to switch on and get to work. Two lads we love having in the room.

If we continually remove the things we’re not good at, eventually our fitness becomes a collection of things we’re already good at.

That might feel comfortable, but it puts a pretty low ceiling on what we can become capable of.

Good training should expose our weaknesses, show us where the gaps are, and give us somewhere to go.

Because we can’t develop what we continually choose not to confront.

That doesn’t mean asking a beginner to perform the most advanced version of a movement. It means finding the appropriate entry point and starting there.

It comes back to one of CrossFit’s oldest principles:

ā€œThe needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind.ā€ — Greg Glassman

We’re not expecting Grandma to do what an Olympian does.

We’re saying both benefit from becoming stronger, more coordinated, more balanced and more capable of controlling their own body. And more.

The coach changes the degree. Not the need to develop.

Meet people where they are, without removing where we’re trying to take them.

That’s why ā€œI can’t do thatā€ isn’t a particularly good reason to avoid something. It might be the exact reason to pursue it.

Because if the destination was the only thing that mattered, we’d be missing most of the value of getting there.

That’s where we go next..

Coach Charlotte Bolding continues part 3.

R U OK? Day šŸ’›

Community means being known, being noticed and noticing others in return.

When you train alongside the same people, at the same time, week after week, they learn your normal.

They know who talks too much before 6am.
Who always takes the same spot on the floor.
Who hangs around after class.
Who brings the vibes.
Who normally has plenty to say.

And because they know your normal, they notice when something changes.

When you’re quieter than usual.
When you haven’t been in all week.
When you’re here, but you’re not quite yourself.

That might be one of the most valuable things a strong community can give us: People close enough to notice.

We talk a lot about what CrossFit does for our physical capacity. We get stronger. Fitter. More capable.

But showing up consistently does something else too.
You become part of other people’s lives.

Someone expects to see you at 6am.
Someone notices when you haven’t reserved for class.
Someone remembers what you told them last week.
Someone knows you well enough to recognise when ā€œI’m fineā€ probably means something else.

That matters.

We’re not here to diagnose or fix each other. Sometimes we won’t know what to say. But we can pay attention.

We can ask the question.
We can listen properly.
We can ask again.
And we can help someone find more support when they need it.

Because community isn’t just having people around you.
It’s being known well enough to be noticed.

Today is R U OK? Day.
Use it as a reminder to check in on your people.

And then keep doing it when there isn’t a day on the calendar reminding you to šŸ’›

There’s value in staying on the journey with things we’re not very good at yet.

This came up in our 7:15am post-class chat yesterday and seemed to resonate, so we figured it was probably worth sharing beyond the four walls of the gym.

CrossFit has a pretty reliable way of making a beginner out of all of us eventually.

And that’s not an accident.

We pursue difficult skills because what they demand of us is where the development happens.

You might spend years working towards a muscle-up, handstand walk or pull-up. Whether you master it or not, the work develops strength, coordination, control and capacity you didn’t have before.

And something else.

The ability to remain a student.

To be a beginner again. To not be good at something straight away. To miss reps, get it wrong, look a bit s**t for a while and keep showing up willing to learn.

There’s humility in that. And that’s a good place to be coached from.

That’s why difficult movements aren’t just for people who can already do them.

The pursuit of them is part of how we develop — physically and mentally.

Sometimes you get the movement. Sometimes you don’t.

Either way, you are better for having pursued it.

So why keep pursuing movements you might never get?

Coach Charlotte Bolding rant continues in Part 2.

Being a good Dad and being a good man go hand in hand.

Providing. Protecting. Being present. Keeping your word. Looking after yourself so you can keep showing up for the people who count on you.

We’re proud to have a gym full of men doing exactly that.

Men who train hard. Get humbled. Take coaching. Encourage the bloke beside them. Keep showing up.

Not because fitness is the most important thing in their life.

Because being fit makes them more capable for the things that are.

And that example carries well beyond these four walls.

Your kids are watching.
Your mates are watching.
The people around you are better for it.

That’s community.
That’s leadership.

Talk the talk.
Walk the walk.
Show them the way.

To the good men raising good humans at CrossFit Bass Coast thank you for setting the standard.

Happy Father’s Day, Dads.

Keep leading from the front.

Our job is to coach.
Yours is to stay coachable.

The best progress happens when both sides lean into that.

We watch, teach, correct and challenge. We learn how you move, when to push the intensity and when to pull things back.

You bring the willingness to listen, ask questions, take on feedback and keep working at the things that don’t come easily.

Some days that means adding weight to the bar. Other days it means taking it off. Scaling a movement to preserve the intended stimulus. Slowing things down to get the mechanics right before adding intensity.

Sometimes it’s one small correction that finally makes something click.

That’s how coaching is supposed to work.

Come willing to learn.
Leave better than you came.
