The Illawarra Steelers season ended in disappointment after a 20-0 defeat to first-placed Newcastle Knights in the final round of the NSWRL Women's Premiership on Saturday in Newcastle.

The Steelers opened their 2026 campaign with four wins from their first five games, but a slump in the second half of the season, losing four of their last six, saw them slip to 8th on the ladder to finish just one competition point outside the top five and a finals berth.

The Illawarra Steelers face a do-or-die clash on Saturday as they take on the ladder-leading Newcastle Knights in the final round of the NSWRL Women's Premiership at the Newcastle Knights Centre of Excellence in Newcastle, with their finals hopes hanging in the balance.

A Steelers victory would lift them to 14 competition points with a 7-4 record, keeping their finals dream alive. However, they’ll also be relying on the 11th-placed Wenty Magpies to pull off an upset against Mounties, who currently share fifth place with Illawarra.

The Illawarra Steelers hopes of making the finals have had one more hurdle added after a 34-12 loss against the Penrith Panthers in Round 9 of the NSWRL Women’s Premiership at Croome Regional Sporting Complex on Saturday.

After slipping from third to sixth on the ladder, the Steelers now face a do-or-die final round clash against the ladder-leading Knights in Newcastle on Saturday. With finals hopes on the line, only a win will keep Illawarra’s campaign alive.
