Weβre back again with another edition of our Past Player Profile series, and this time weβre taking a look at the playing career of David Lores, an integral figure in our dominance in the 1960s.
David joined the Echidnas in 1962 & played for 11 consecutive seasons, compiling a total of 95 matches, all of which were in A Grade. The start of Davidβs career couldnβt have gone any better, as after playing in a losing Grand Final against Onkaparinga in 1962/63, David was a crucial part of our four (4) consecutive A Grade Premierships from 1963/64-1966/67.
A batter who spent much of his career either opening or batting at No. 3, Davidβs best seasons came in 1964/65 (248 runs @ 20.67), 1965/66 (231 runs @ 21.00) & 1969/70 (257 runs @ 25.70, including a career high score of 89).
An occasional wicketkeeper when club stalwarts & Life Members, Brian Blight & Malcolm Paech werenβt behind the stumps, David won the A Grade Most Dismissals in 1972/73, his final season, with 10 catches & 3 stumpings.
For his career, David scored 1,620 runs @ 16.36 with seven (7) half centuries. A critically underused bowler during an era when the Echidnas had a plethora of bowling options, David claimed 38 wickets at an outstanding average of 13.05 and took 41 catches & 6 stumpings.
David was the first of five (5) members of the Lores family to have played at the Hill, as his brothers, Peter & Ronald (Ron) both played for Wistow in the 1960s & 70s as well, with Peter playing 63 matches (35 in Aβs inc. as an A Grade Premiership player together with David in 1966/67) & Ron 76 matches (49 in Aβs inc. as an A Grade Premiership player in 1973/74). Memorably, Davidβs career high of 89 saw him partner with Peter for a 108 run, 6th wicket partnership.
However, the family connection doesnβt stop there. Davidβs sons, Ben & Jack, both started their juniors careers for Mount Barker before going on to play for Wistow, with Ben playing 21 seniors matches between 2005-2008 and Jack, who also played U16s for Wistow, 32 seniors matches in three (3) stints at the Hill β from 2005-2008 & 2011-2013, before returning after a 13 season absence last season. Whilst Ben & Jack both mostly played in B & C Grade, both of them did play A Grade like their father & uncles but unlike David, Ben & Jack both scored centuries for Wistow with Ben making 113 against Hahndorf in Bβs in 2007/08 & Jack 132* from just 87 balls against Langhorne Creek in Bβs in 2012/13 (including a 163 run partnership for the 6th wicket (tied for the highest 6th wicket partnership in any grade in club history) with newly-named 2026/27 B Grade skipper, Oliver Lukins).
Well done David!
