End of Term 2 Grading
I stepped straight off the plane and straight into a kids grading
It was so good to feel the energy in the academy and see all the smiling faces
Both our Jr and Sr kids programs have been running for many years now delivering some great success stories in self development
This past term all our kids students have been working hard but having fun on their Joy-Jitsu journeys on the mat picking up new skills and making new friends
Congratulations to all of you as everyone performed great at the graduation with lots of stripes given out on belts with a select few being awarded a new belt colour
It’s always great to see the smiles on our students but looking over at the parents and seeing to look of pride in how far their children have come and the excitement for the continued journey ahead makes the many hours on the many teaching our smallest Bulldogs all worth it.
A big thank you for all the dedication and hard work from our assistant instructors and coaches for all the timeless hours on the mats delivering great sessions day in day out
We are looking forward to term 3 so look to enroll your children now

It’s now that time of year where I have Gradings and Seminars here in Australia and overseas so will be traveling a lot over the next few months
During my travels I get asked a lot of Jiu-Jitsu related questions but more often than not it comes around to a question about gradings and graduation
I get asked many times by students and coaches about what is required at each belt level or what is it I’m looking for when it comes to gradings
The answer isn’t that simple as students all have different paths in Jiu-Jitsu and strengths and weaknesses, plus personal battles that no one may know about other than me or their instructor
But many years teaching and grading students gives you a good perspective on what you are looking for but one of the things I hear all too often is time and the expectation to be graded just because you have done a certain number of classes, or been training for a certain time period and that gives students an entitlement to be graded

It is funny now people get asked to be promoted by time just because the IBJJF put minimum time on each belt.
DON’T FORGET THIS IS MINIMUM NOT MAXIMUM
If you ask me for a belt because you already pass your minimum time on your belt you are going to double your minimum time.
Promotion for me is understanding what each belt means... Not Time.
At the Carlson Gracie Academy if you ask about a promotion you’ll get a big are you crazy, go train and when I see you care more about the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle than the colour of your belt you will be promoted
