RecWest Footscray

An amazing day closing Recwest Footscray for the final time celebrating the history and significance of the inner west, and YMCA presence. Staff patrons and volunteers alike all came through to connect and relive memories from over 72 years of operation.

The building was opened in 1953 and the YMCA has been involved operating from 1961. Amazingly we had special visitors over the year, including someone who was here on the day of opening.

Thank you to Maribyrnong city council, and past director Terry, for their efforts to say goodbye in such a meaningful way for the people.

We look forward to seeing this facility be redeveloped and reopen with the same Community heart, and spirit that it currently holds.

To our beloved community, we want to thank you for all the memories we have made and shared with you all.

RecWest Footscray wouldn’t be the same without you all.

We would love to remind you all about the event Saturday. Walk the halls one last time, enjoy one last group fitness class, write your favourite memories on our dedicated wall.

💙 Farewell RecWest Footscray 💙

After more than 60 years of memories, movement and community, The doors have been closed to make way for an exciting redevelopment.

Since opening in 1961 as the Footscray Y, this centre has been so much more than a gym. It’s been a home for basketball games, fitness classes, birthday parties, friendships, and countless moments that shaped the heart of the west.

To everyone who has walked through these doors — thank you. You are the reason this place became such a special hub of connection and belonging.

This is not goodbye forever. A brand-new RecWest will rise soon, bigger and better — with more space, new facilities, and the same community spirit at its core.

RecWest Footscray will close in September 2025, with demolition works and construction of a new RecWest Footscray facility to commence. Our last fully operational day will be Sunday August 31!

After 23 years and 6 months service as Administration Officer at RecWest Footscray YMCA, Paula Mason has decided to call it a day & close her diary for the last time 📒.

"Seeing as our beloved RecWest Footscray YMCA facility is going to be redeveloped, I feel it is the perfect time for my retirement. Thank you to all the beautiful people who have come through our facility over the last 23 years, its been a pleasure meeting you all"
