Under the first phase of the scheme, $1,000 will be paid for revolvers and $850 for semi-automatic handguns. $850 will be paid for double-barrel shotguns and $650 for single barrel. Between $650 and $1,000 will be paid for rifles, while air rifles have a fixed compensation of $450.

The governments said phase 2 of the scheme would begin in early 2027, and provide “a pathway to compensation” for “eligible higher-value fi****ms with an indicative market value above $3,000, capped at $10,000 per firearm”.

NSW Premier Chris Minns has vowed to press ahead with a national gun buyback scheme even though the ACT is the only other jurisdiction to sign up, six months after the Bondi Beach attack.

NSW Premier Chris Minns confirmed on Monday that the state would press ahead with a national fi****ms buyback scheme even though the ACT is the only other jurisdiction to sign up, more than six months after the Bondi Beach terrorist attack that killed 15 people.

The federal buyback, modelled on the scheme introduced by then prime minister John Howard after the Port Arthur massacre, was meant to have every state and territory on board by 1 July. Anthony Albanese had planned late last year for all jurisdictions to sign up to a national scheme, but the plan met pushback from predominantly opposition-held states that baulked at co-funding it.

"To be frank … it does look like it will be NSW, the ACT, and a very similar form of reform in Western Australia – but, that's likely to be the only states," Minns said. "Nonetheless, we're going ahead with it. We think it's important for our state. We're the ones who had the worst terrorism event the country's seen and we want to have tough gun laws in place to keep people safe."

Victoria walked away from the scheme in May after an independent review of the state's gun laws by former police chief commissioner Ken Lay, with Premier Jacinta Allan rejecting the national buyback. The Northern Territory, under Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro, rejected the plan as early as January if the territory would be required to foot part of the bill, arguing there could not be a "one-size-fits-all-approach" to firearm reform.
