Official Opening Day – A Wonderful Celebration

The Wembley Downs Tennis Club held its Official Opening Day on Saturday, the 22nd, and it was a great success!

It was a fantastic afternoon filled with tennis, speeches, unveilings, and a champagne toast, generously provided by our sponsor, Jeff Wright. Club members also kindly contributed a delicious spread for afternoon tea.
We were honoured to have Christine Tonkin MLA and Councillor Stephanie Proud in attendance, with Councillor Proud being a long-time supporter and social member of the club.

In the evening, the Social Committee hosted a special Opening Dinner—a beautiful long-table, alfresco event on the terrace. Many members and friends attended to celebrate our newly refurbished clubhouse, making it a truly joyous occasion.
After such a long time without full use of our facilities, it was wonderful to come together and enjoy this special milestone.

The first of the club’s three annual prestigious handicap competitions kicked off with the Ladies’ Doubles, organised and generously sponsored by long-time member Alan McLaughlin.

On a beautiful sunny morning, 12 ladies gathered to compete in an event filled with high-quality tennis, exciting rallies, and nail-bitingly close results. The spirited matches were a testament to the players' skills and determination, providing plenty of entertainment for all involved.

After a fiercely competitive morning, the dynamic duo of Fiona and Jo emerged victorious, clinching the winners' title. Runners-up Rae and Mary put up a fantastic fight, adding to the day’s excitement.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Alan McLaughlin for his continued support and impeccable organisation of the event. Thank you also to all participants for making the day such a success. We look forward to the next competition in the series.

At Wembley Downs Tennis Club, the courts recently witnessed a heartwarming and inspiring sight: 9-year-old Grace Gribbon teaming up with 88-year-old Alan McLaughlin at Saturday social tennis.

Grace, a rising star in the Tennis West Super 10's program, represents the future of tennis. Her involvement in this prestigious competition for the leading 10-and-under players in WA highlights her talent and dedication.
Alan, who turns 89 next week, is proof that age is no barrier to enjoying the sport. A long-standing member of the club, Alan continues to amaze with his agility and precise shot-making.

Seeing Grace and Alan partner up was a delightful reminder of how tennis bridges generations. It also showcases the health benefits of the sport, with Alan’s longevity serving as a testament to the physical and social advantages of staying active on the court.

We are proud to have both Grace and Alan as part of our tennis family.

Last Monday, our pickle ball session had some unexpected spectators – two beautiful black swans. These majestic visitors seemed quite content watching the lively games unfold and added a touch of magic to what was already an enjoyable evening.

Through our fantastic coaching provider, Tennis Excellence, WDTC is excited to offer a pickle ball Programme every Monday evening. If you haven’t heard of pickle ball yet, it’s times to get acquainted with this rapidly growing sport.
