BETTER WEATHER AND A QUICK GREEN GREETS THE 48 PLAYERS IN TODAY’S $300 DAY AT SOUTHERN CROSS.

For a pleasant change the strong winds that have plagued many bowls days over the past couple of months decided to abate somewhat today and that was very much welcomed as Matty Shepherd had prepared a quick surface for todays event.

The first 12 ends were not totally devoid of wind but several teams made the most of the conditions and the $300 day’s different rules to make positive starts and take serious advantage of the sixth end’s double score rule. Others took advantage of the even faster green after a lunch time rolling, to return some very competitive scores in the second round.

After two rounds and 24 ends were completed the winner was indisputable with a total of 41 points, and Roy Lowe, Roger Cavanagh and Wendy Worssell were the winners.
Runners up, and with an impressive performance in the second round, was the team of Doug Christiansen, Jack Bell and Len Gurgenti.

Thanks for their efforts off the green today in providing our “beef burger” style lunch, go to Joe Torrisi and the ladies in the kitchen…it was very much appreciated.
To the team behind the bar who ensured that nobody came close to dehydration, Paul Brayley and Geoff Creighton. And to Kevin Mooney who, as our new Games Director, with his diligent offsider Gordon Assay, ensured the days event went off with smooth precision.
And last but definitely not least, special thanks to all who joined us today at “The Cross”…because without you these days would not be possible.

IT WAS “COLD TURKEY” ALL ROUND TODAY AT “THE CROSS.”

Today at Southern Cross Bowls Club’s Turkey triples it wasn’t so much the players chattering…more their teeth as the day turned chilly to say the least.
Still, 42 brave souls hit the green at 10am to contest the day, and the generous prize money from sponsors Paul Brayley and Barry Ziebell.
Two rounds of bowls, breaking for lunch after the first round to be greeted by one of the largest salad rolls I have personally seen (and consumed) for a very long time. Thanks to Cheryl and her kitchen team for that treat.
Back to the green and some hotly contested competition, despite the diminishing temperatures.
At the end of the second round it was back to the warmth of the clubhouse to thaw out and enjoy some liquid refreshments while awaiting the results of the day’s play…and for Southern Cross members the CrossPot draw, this month standing at $300.00.
First cab off the rank in the prize stakes today was the consolation prize named after the hindmost portion of an equine animal….and the winners of that esteemed prize was Geoff Creighton and his team of Charlie Ackland and (third player (absent) not known to writer), seen here with our two sponsors.

Congratulations to the prize winners, thanks to all who turned out today in the challenging conditions and a big thanks to Sponsors Barry and Paul not just for the sponsorship but also their work behind the bar. Thanks also to Gordon Assay and Kevin Mooney for managing the cards and the scoring.
And the CrossPot...number 46 was drawn but the owner of that number, Peter Guy, was not in attendance so next month's draw will be for $350.00.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.
Today saw the 2026 Annual General Meeting of Southern Cross Bowls Club take place at the Club with a good percentage of members attending from 10am.

Vice President Paul Brayley opened the meeting with a welcome to all attendees and continued to talk of his delight in the welcoming nature of the club and its membership, the great atmosphere engendered by those who participate in club events and to praise the work of many of the club’s volunteers, without whom the club could not function as well as it does.

Having reviewed the financial report from the auditors and noted with satisfaction the improved financial performance over that of the previous year, all positions were declared vacant and it was opened for the meeting to consider and vote for the club’s officers for the 2026/27 year.

Nominations for those positions were voted upon and the following were elected:-

Congratulations by acclamation accompanied the election of each officer.

It was resolved that the first meeting of the new committee will be held be at 9am on Friday August 21st.

Following the meeting the club’s Pennant teams held a practice session, followed by lunch for the teams and those members who were able to remain to enjoy it.

It is also the big monthly Cross Pot draw...and remember...to be in it to win it make sure your number is in the barrel by being a FULLY FINANCIAL MEMBER of Southern Cross Bowls Club by Tuesday 11th August, or you will not be eligible to win the $300.00 prize on offer this month.

PENNANT PRACTICE!! Don't forget Saturday 1st August at 10 am is Pennant practice number 1 for all Southern Cross pennant players. And a further reminder that our AGM is set for the 9th August at 10am and all members are encouraged to attend and to have your say on all matters arising. Social Bowls & Pennant practice number 2 will follow the AGM.

Apologies to our regular social bowers but unfortunately this Sunday too many of our usual social bowls support crew are supporting events from other clubs and therefore we have had to cancel social bowls this week. Hope you can join us again on Sunday the 2nd of August for our usual Bowls & BBQ socials from 11am.

IT WAS 64 AGAINST THE WIND TODAY AT SOUTHERN CROSS.

64 bowlers took to the green today at Southern Cross bowls Club in Warwick with one common enemy…a strong, gusty, cold wind.
16 players from Toowoomba joined teams from Clifton, The Summit, Stanthorpe and all three Warwick clubs to battle both each other and the wind in search of the $800,00 prize money on offer.
After 2 rounds of 14 ends and an Aussie favourite lunch of meat pie, peas and potato, (sorry - no Holden cars) and followed by an ice cream cone desert, pretty much every player was glad to be back in the warm clubhouse for warming drinks of many descriptions, the raffle draws and the presentation of prizes.
Unfortunately todays sponsors, Val Gray and Peter Klowss were unable to attend but their generosity was greatly appreciated by all and especially those who took out the prizes.
5 raffle prizes were the first on offer and lucky winners included Rodger Cavanagh, Aaron McKinney, Danni, and while unable to be absolutely sure I believe Jeff and Tony collected prizes too.
Then to the big prizes for the day, first the Runners Up and $200.00 to share between the team of Al and Jools Buse, Polly Lay and Patrick Walker.who finished the day with 30 points. (Photo 1)

Thanks to everyone who joined us as we celebrated Jumpers & Jazz in July with our July Open Fours event. We greatly appreciate those who drove long distances to be with us on a not so pleasant day and who enjoyed (or suffered through) todays weather. We greatly appreciate your support.
Thanks also to the ladies in the kitchen and Joe Torrisi for our lunches, to Barry and Geoff for keeping those liquid refreshments flowing, to Matty Shepherd for a great green that everyone appreciated, even in that wind, and to Gordon Assay and Kevin Mooney for administering the cards and the scoreboard throughout the day.

CHALLENGING CONDITIONS AT “THE CROSS” TODAY FOR THE $300.00 DAY.

Another top Matty Shepherd green and a strong, icy and gusty wind made for challenging conditions for the 48 players that took to the Southern Cross green today.
However several teams turned in good results in the first round but before sitting down for the usual $300 day lunch of a “burger & salad in a bun”…most eyes were on the team that had amassed 22 points in the first round and a fair amount of conversation stemmed from the words”how do we beat that?”
Well, whether it was something they ate or just pure skill in the conditions two teams did exactly that and took out the money today.
Runner-up was the team of Wayne and Julie Foster and Steve Tyler who added another 18 points in round two to amass 39 points.
However, not to be outdone…Chris Stower, Wayne Dobbin and Graeme Wallace added a second round score of 19 points to total 41 points and take out the win for the day.

Thanks today go not only to all those who turned up to play in the windy and very cool conditions, but also to the ladies in the kitchen, Joe Torrisi for the Bar and Barbecue, Paul, Geoff and Barry for their bar work in the absence of our mate Pete Klowss (get well soon Pete - we miss you) and Kev Mooney for managing the cards and the board today.

We look forward to getting together with many of you again on Sunday as we celebrate Jumpers & Jazz in July with our Open Fours starting at 10am with $800.00 in prize money up for grabs.
