Unfortunately, this has happened quite a few times in Wagga's history - 'If you don't use it, you lose it" sums it up perfectly.
Since the 80's, a lot of our Committee members have seen skating rinks thrive in Wagga - but also die, due to lack of regular continuous attendance numbers.
We have also seen it happen in Canberra & Albury many years ago. (PS Albury Skating Centre is open now - check it out!)
It is now happening across Sydney, with 2 more rinks closing down a few months ago.
In this age of endless entertainment options, PLEASE don't let it keep happening in Wagga 🙏
And keep showing up to support skating rinks/clubs wherever you live.

Every time I see a story like this, it reminds me why I fight so hard for skating rinks.

It would be easy to sell out, take the money, and walk away. Across America, that’s exactly what’s happening. Skating rinks are disappearing because the land is often worth more than the business itself.

But here’s the part many people don’t realize: most rinks don’t close because owners want to quit—they close because communities stop showing up.

A skating rink can’t survive on memories or nostalgia. It survives because families, teens, adults, and friends choose to support it week after week, month after month.

When attendance drops, owners are eventually forced to make an impossible decision. For many, selling the property becomes the only option.

Every time a rink closes, a community loses more than a building. It loses a place where kids make lifelong memories, families spend time together, friendships are built, and generations learn to skate.

At Sportsworld Skate Center, we’re committed to fighting for skating. As long as our community continues to support us, we’ll keep investing, improving, and creating a place where memories are made for years to come.
