This is a really good one. 💕

So often over the years I have heard people say “they are just attention seeking, ignore them”. But when did “attention seeking” become a “bad” thing? Yes, children often seem to choose the most annoying ways to seek our attention, but the need for attention isn’t bad. The need for attention is the most normal and natural thing for a child to do. Gaining attention and attaching to an adult is a primal instinct and yet when a child does this in an unfavourable way we ignore it. The problem is, ignoring a child’s “attention seeking” behaviour doesn’t stop their need. In fact ignoring a child’s need for attention usually means that they will become more desperate for attention and the behaviour will escalate. They will do what they need to until they get the attention they are looking for. This isn’t always positive attention, but it is still attention.

100% most children are just wanting connection!

When we see a child that is in need of connection instead of attention, we see a need that is not being met, not a child who is trying to manipulate us.

I love this 💕💕

Couldn't agree with this more and I'd take it a step further and remove any age and follow the child. Kids are so individual - some kids read at 4, some kids read at 8 and there is no “right” answer, no “right” age.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By far, my 7-year-old son's favourite thing to do is to play and play and play. I hope it never stops! He's teaching me how to play again - a skill most of us adults have forgotten or devalued.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My hope is that he grows into an adult who continues to play and knows the immense value of it. I hope he never loses the ability to be in the moment as he does now.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yet, we're so worried about teaching academics. Why?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Learning how to read or add or subtract isn't an emergency. And as Dr. Peter Gray says if a child lives in a literate society, if parents read to children, if there are books in the house, then the skills of reading and writing are viral. It would be almost impossible for children not to learn those skills when exposed to them organically.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So, let's not waste their precious time trying to speed up learning. Kids aren't meant to sit still or focus on tasks that are boring to them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let's leave the space in their days for what they need to be doing - playing, growing, exploring, getting messy and muddy and having fun.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They will learn at their own pace and when they do, it is a joy, not a chore. Trust your child. And at this time, trust yourself to be the teacher your child needs. Your child doesn't need school right now, they need you. You were their first teacher and you are overqualified for the job. 💛
