The fitness industry has become obsessed with novelty.
If an exercise looks crazy, feels brutal, or racks up millions of views, we assume it must be better.
But harder isn’t always better.
And “different” certainly doesn’t mean “more effective.”
Good training is actually pretty boring sometimes.
It’s about consistently doing the things that produce results:
✅ Build strength
✅ Build muscle
✅ Improve mobility
✅ Develop conditioning
✅ Build resilience
Then progressively getting better at them.
The goal isn’t to destroy your body every session.
The goal is to adapt, recover, and come back stronger.
Because your training shouldn’t just make you better at surviving workouts.
It should make you stronger, healthier, more capable, and more resilient in real life.
That’s functional training.
Not standing on unstable surfaces while juggling a kettlebell because it looks cool on Instagram.
Train with purpose.
Progress with intent.
Think long term.
Social media rewards what gets attention.
Your body rewards what gets results.

After spending more than 20 years in and around gyms 👴, one thing I’ve noticed is that many people are prioritising the newest exercise variations they see on social media. Most of the time, these variations make the movement harder to set up, harder to execute, or add unnecessary complexity that doesn’t contribute to better results.
For 90% of people, sticking to the same basic movements and getting better at them over time will lead to far more progress than constantly switching exercises every couple of weeks.
And no the goal isn’t only progressive overload.
Think of it this way: if you can perform an exercise with 85% proficiency, rather than increasing the weight right away, focus on improving that ex*****on close to 100%. Then, when you do increase the weight, your proficiency might drop to 90%, and that’s when you stay at that weight and master it again before moving on. Repeat that cycle.
I’m not saying you should never switch exercises — but keep your core movements consistent for at least 4–6 weeks, making only small adjustments when needed.
You can’t get better at something without repetition and improvement should be part of the goal.

💥 F2F CLIENT SPOTLIGHT 💥
BIG shoutout to Rosalie. We've just passed our first 12 months working together.
We first sat down in August 2025 with some very clear goals - lose weight, improve balance and to get stronger.
From day one, we focused on building sustainable healthy habits, training 3–5 times per week and improving her nutrition.
And the results speak for themselves, Rosalie is now consistently hitting 5 gym sessions with 2 - 3 weights sessions following her program and attending the active aging classes and recently added stretch and mobility.
To date she's lost a MASSIVE 23kg!
She says it best with: "I haven't felt this fit and strong in 20 years"
Rose, you should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved so far. The dedication you've made to yourself over the last 12 months has been a joy to be involved in.
I am proud to be working with someone as dedicated as you and can't wait to see what the holds.

MASSIVE shoutout to Simone and the incredible progress she has made over the past 19 months!
We first sat down in December 2024 with one very clear goal - get healthier again.
From day one, we focused on building consistency, creating sustainable habits, training 3–5 times per week and improving her nutrition.
And the results speak for themselves, Simone is now consistently hitting 5 gym sessions every single week and has lost a MASSIVE 52kg!
I think Simone says it best with: "The girl in the first photo is finding her spark again. The girl in the second photo never thought it was possible"
Simone, you should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved so far. The commitment you've made to yourself over the last 19 months have been incredible to watch.
I am proud to be working with someone as dedicated as you and can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store.

Most people read something like this…
Feel motivated for 10 seconds…
Then fall straight back into the same habits that got them here.
Nothing changes.
Because the problem isn’t what you read.
It’s what you do after.
Ex*****on is everything.
You don’t need another quote.
You need a system you actually stick to.
That’s where I come in.

As a coach, it can be difficult to shift a client's mindset from constantly chasing exhaustion to training for a specific outcome because sweat, burning muscles and fatigue give them immediate proof that they dic something.
Instead of focusing only on what you're training explain why it matters to them and how it can improve an aspect of their everyday life they genuinely care about.
Then give them a better way to measure progress such as week-one versus week-four videos improved technique, greater jump height, faster movement or better balance etc.
