🐴 WELFARE WEDNESDAY | Supporting the wellbeing of our members

Pony Club provides young people with far more than riding skills. It can also help them develop confidence, responsibility, strong relationships and practical skills that support them throughout life.

A 2024 study of young people with ADHD involved in horse association youth programs found perceived improvements across every life skill measured. Respect received the highest rating, with strong results also reported for decision-making, goal setting, time management, problem-solving, building friendships, effective listening and financial responsibility.

The benefits extended beyond the arena. Of those surveyed, 69% said participation had definitely influenced their goals for further education, while 67% said it had positively influenced their career goals.

Although the study focused specifically on young people with ADHD, its findings highlight the valuable role equine youth programs can play in positive youth development.

Every Pony Club rally, camp, competition and volunteer role gives young people opportunities to take responsibility, make decisions, solve problems, communicate, manage their time and support others.

The horses may bring them to Pony Club, but the confidence, connections and life skills they develop can stay with them long after they leave the arena.
