The importance and urgency of this campaign cannot be underestimated. The future of our sport is in jeopardy unless we get significant concessions.

The Australian Government has committed to reviewing management plans for Australia’s marine park networks. The government has also committed to expanding the area of Australian waters classified as “Highly Protected” to at least 30% by 2030. Meeting that target will require at least a further 523,980 km² of Australian waters to be declared no-fishing areas. It is important these additional no-fishing areas do not include your favourite fishing spots.

The Game Fishing Association of Australia supports well-managed marine parks that protect Australia's unique marine environment while providing for sustainable recreational fishing. As new management plans for Australia's Commonwealth marine parks are developed, we encourage Parks Australia to:

Recognise recreational fishing as a valued low-impact activity in Commonwealth marine parks that provides significant social, cultural, economic and wellbeing benefits.

Retain access to important recreational fishing grounds, including reefs, canyons, banks, seamounts, game fishing grounds and offshore locations important to local fishers.

Only restrict recreational fishing where there is clear scientific evidence that fishing presents an unacceptable risk to a specific conservation objective of the marine park.

Where restrictions on fishing are demonstrated to be necessary, apply the least restrictive measures capable of achieving the specific desired conservation outcome.

Work collaboratively with recreational fishers to develop simple, practical management that is easy to understand, and regularly reviewed to ensure it delivers conservation outcomes and supports quality fishing experiences.

Recognise and support fishers as partners in marine conservation by investing in amenities to support recreational fishing and collaborative citizen science programs that harness the knowledge, experience and stewardship of fishing clubs and recreational fishers.

The Game Fishing Association of Australia believes healthy marine ecosystems and quality recreational fishing experiences are complementary objectives. Well-designed marine parks should protect Australia's marine environment while celebrating recreational fishing as a valued and sustainable low-impact activity within Australia's Commonwealth marine parks.

Whether anglers live or regularly fish in any of the marine parks, their voice is important to prevent the encroachment of exclusion zones.

What a day. Not just one but two to christen the new rig!

Scored an invite out on the big Noosacat with father and son gun fishos and top blokes Simon and Bailey Webster 🎣

The fellas both caught their first big Bluefin tuna. Amazing memories made. Bailey took his fish home and Simon chose to release his after a pretty full on battle. Well deserved fish after lots of hard yards and near misses over the years for the boys!

What a year it’s been for our club members and the broader game fishing community.

Recorder Christine reckons we’ve cracked 2,000,000 tag points for the year with 200+ billfish tagged and released for the season.

In this 9 first time marlin tag and release anglers!

Word is also some 9 tuna and swordfish over 100kg have been captured by our 90+ members.

To celebrate a very broad group of club members results we are looking to have our Presentation Night on 12 September 2026.

Congrats to club members Indy McLeod and Josh Conway lighting up capture boards across the state in recent days.

Thanks to Lakes and Corinella clubs for weighing fish on behalf of our members. It is much appreciated.

These captures will not only provide seafood delicacies for family and friends but will also be recorded for Club presentation awards and potential for State and National Awards. Congrats guys.

Dusty hung on for 3.5 hours and let dad have a go. Sadly after a total of 7 hours Aiden, Matt and Dusty lost the fish at the boat estimated at 2.4m total length or so140kg plus.

How good is this from Bermagui! 🔥🎣

Nicolas has been out there tagging marlin off the South coast, and the results are already rolling in! We’re seeing some of those exact fish turn up again as recaptures, which is exactly what it’s all about. It’s more than just an awesome fishing story; it’s providing vital data on how these incredible fish move through our waters. 📈

The stats are unreal:
🔹 Richard Abela was with Nicolas when they tagged a striped marlin, only to recapture the same fish 4 weeks later!
🔹 During the Blue Water Classic, Nicolas tagged another striped marlin that was recaptured by a commercial boat just 2 weeks later.

Huge shoutout to the crew for contributing to citizen science and helping us understand these legends of the deep. That’s top-tier fishing right there! 🙌💎
