🏆 THE DUDLEY JONES CUP — MORE THAN JUST A TROPHY

The 1st Grade Men’s Pride & Joy. The trophy everyone wants to lift, touch, hold — and maybe even drink out of on Grand Final Day.

But what is the Dudley Jones Cup really about?

Dudley Jones came to Townsville from Country NSW, having previously been the Rugby Master at Sydney Grammar School. A barrister by profession and a passionate rugby man, Jones played a key role in bringing rugby back to Townsville.

Alongside Col Harkness, Ron Barnes, Ian Straughten and Alan Dalton, Dudley Jones was among the founding members who helped establish the Townsville & District Rugby Union, with Jones becoming its first President.

Fast forward to 1967 — the first TDRU season, with University taking on City in the 1st Grade Grand Final.

University claimed the inaugural premiership, led by a man who would become a TDRU life member. John “Tractor” Tracey scored a try, kicked every goal he attempted and helped guide University to the very first TDRU premiership.

The Dudley Jones Cup represents more than winning a Grand Final. It represents the history, people and passion that have shaped rugby in Townsville for generations.

🏆 THIS YEAR, IT’S BROTHERS VS TEACHERS WEST

Brothers have lifted the Dudley Jones Cup 29 times, including an incredible six-peat from 1980–1985. Can they claim another premiership and add to their remarkable history?

Or will Teachers West spoil the party? With 16 Grand Final victories of their own, including a five-peat from 2015–2019, they’ll be looking to add another chapter to their legacy.
