🌟 AQHA Open Divisions – Understanding Your Options in the Show Pen! 🌟
Our AQHA Open divisions at Tropical Coast Western Performance Club follow the official AQHA / HSAA Rule Book and are structured around either the horse’s age or the rider’s eligibility. These divisions give competitors the chance to step into fully recognised AQHA / HSAA classes with the correct tack, attire, and riding requirements 🐴
Whether you’re showing a young horse, a seasoned campaigner, or competing as a Youth or Amateur, there’s a division designed specifically for your level and your horse’s age.
Appropriate western attire and appropriate tack are required for western events and english (hunter) attire and appropriate tack required for hunter events. Please refer to the AQHA Rule book for more information: https://www.aqha.com.au/rulebook
✅ AQHA Divisions - High Level:
➡ Senior Horse (6 years & over)
Horses must be ridden in a curb bit and chain, one‑handed, following AQHA rules.
➡ Junior Horse (2–5 years)
Junior horses may be shown in a snaffle or hackamore two‑handed, or in a curb bit one‑handed.
➡ Amateur Owner
For riders who do not receive payment for horse‑related activities. Horses must be owned or leased by the competitor and registered. A current Amateur card is required. Includes Select Amateur and Novice Amateur.
➡ Youth (7–18 years)
Youth competitors ride Junior and Senior horses according to AQHA rules.
💡 Is an AQHA Division right for you?
✔ You’re ready to compete under full AQHA rules
✔ Your horse is a registered breed i.e. AQHA, PHAA
✔ You want to earn AQHA points or gain experience in official divisions
✔ You and your horse meet the age and equipment requirements under the AQHA Rules
✔ You’re progressing beyond club‑level divisions and want to step into recognised AQHA classes.
If you’re looking to challenge yourself, grow your skills, and compete under official AQHA rules, then these classes are the perfect place to take that next step 💙

🌟 TCWPC Open Division – For Riders Ready to Step Up! 🌟
The TCWPC Open division at Tropical Coast Western Performance Club is designed for confident, experienced riders — whether you’re already competing in AQHA Open classes or coming from another discipline and want a place to showcase your skills without the pressure of the required AQHA tack and gear🐴
This club‑specific division gives riders the freedom to compete at an Open level while still enjoying flexibility in gear and a welcoming club environment.
✅ Key things to know:
➡ Offered across all TCWPC events
➡ Open to AQHA Open riders — you can cross‑enter with AQHA Open divisions
➡ TCWPC Novice riders may also cross enter, but if you win an TCWPC Open class, you’ll move out of TCWPC Novice for that event.
➡ Any horse, any age, any breed and any registration status
➡ Any legal bit allowed as long as it meets HSAA/AQHA rules and suits the horse and rider combination. You may ride two handed in a curb for this event, though riders are encouraged to try one handed.
👗 Dress Code:
➡ Long pants, long sleeve shirt, hat or helmet, and leather boots
➡ Youth riders (under 18) must wear a helmet
🪶 Gear Requirements:
➡ English, western, or stock/fender saddles all permitted
➡ You can stay in the same attire for all classes — mix and match as needed.
💡 Is this division for you?
✔ You’re an AQHA Open competitor wanting extra ring time in a club environment
✔ You’re experienced and your horse is ready, but you don’t have all the required AQHA equipment / tack
✔ You’re confident showing your horse but not ready to ride one‑handed in a curb
✔ You want an Open‑level challenge without progressing to full AQHA Open events.
If that sounds like you, the TCWPC Open Division is the perfect place to compete, grow, and enjoy the sport at a higher level — with the same supportive TCWPC community behind you 💙

🌟 TCWPC Novice Division – Your Next Step in the Journey! 🌟
The TCWPC Novice Division at Tropical Coast Western Performance Club is designed for riders and horses who are progressing from Newcomer, or for those coming from other disciplines who have some show experience but aren’t quite ready for AQHA Open classes just yet 🐴
This club‑specific division gives you the chance to build skills, gain confidence, and experience a wider range of events while still enjoying a supportive, learning‑focused environment.
✅ Key things to know:
➡ Offered across all TCWPC events
➡ Open to any horse, any age, any breed
➡ Horse/rider combination must not have won an AQHA Open class
➡ Win 3 Novice classes in the same event (across 3 shows) and you’ll move up to TCWPC Open for that event.
👗 Dress Code:
➡ Long pants, long sleeve shirt, hat or helmet, and leather boots
➡ Youth riders (under 18) must wear a helmet
🪶 Gear Requirements:
➡ English, western, or stock/fender saddles all permitted
➡ Any AQHA / HSAA legal bit (snaffle or curb) is permitted - and you can ride two handed in a curb if needed.
➡ You can stay in the same attire for all classes — mix and match as needed
💡 Is this division for you?
✔ You’ve progressed from Newcomer but aren’t ready for Open yet
✔ You’ve competed in other disciplines and want to step into Western Performance without starting at Newcomer
✔ Your horse is green to AQHA‑style events, even if you have experience
✔ You want a welcoming space to grow before tackling Open classes
If that sounds like you, the TCWPC Novice Division is the perfect place to continue building your partnership and showing confidence in the ring 💙
