🏏 A Vision Years in the Making 🏏

Over the next few weeks, you'll start to see some exciting changes taking place at Mick Downey Oval, with construction set to begin on our all-weather training facility and cricket net extension.

This project has been nearly three years in the making and has involved countless hours of volunteer work, planning, meetings and funding applications.

While many people and organisations have played an important role along the way, a special acknowledgement must go to our former President, Jason Cameron, whose passion and commitment have helped turn this vision into a reality.

The journey began back in February 2024 and has included:

πŸ“… February 2024 – Jason Cameron, Junior Coordinator Andrew Bye and Senior Coordinator Joe Hauff met with Queensland Cricket to discuss opportunities for an all-weather roof over the training nets.

πŸ“… April 2024 – Meetings with the Queensland Government to explore funding opportunities.

πŸ“… June 2024 – Discussions with Townsville City Council to obtain approvals and permits for a 35m x 14m roof structure and the extension of the training net footprint.

βœ… February 2025 – $55,000 secured from the Queensland Government towards the all-weather roof.

πŸ“… June 2025 – Working with Townsville City Council to update the club lease, allowing the training net extension to proceed.

βœ… February 2026 – $55,000 secured from Queensland Cricket for new internal netting, synthetic playing surfaces and lighting.

πŸ“¦ March 2026 – All coming together now! Materials ordered for the project.

βœ… June 2026 – A further $38,500 secured through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund to assist with the perimeter fencing.

🚧 July/August 2026 – After removal of our current nets in late July, construction will begin with an estimated build time of five weeks.

Although no longer Club President, Jason has continued to volunteer his time by taking on the role of Project Coordinator, working behind the scenes to coordinate the various trades, suppliers and contractors to help keep the project moving. It's another example of the dedication shown by volunteers who simply want to leave the club in a better place than they found it. πŸ‘

This project would not have been possible without the support of Queensland Cricket, the Queensland Government the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Townsville City Council, and everyone who has contributed their time and expertise along the way.
We're looking forward to seeing the facility take shape and can't wait to share the finished result with our members and the wider cricket community.

The future of cricket at Western Suburbs Cricket Club is looking brighter than ever. πŸ’™πŸ–€πŸ

Anyone able to shed some light on this uncovered Townsville cricket photo from the 1920s?

How amazing is this?! A lovely lady, named Liz, found in storage this picture from 1922/23. A lot of the wording is missing but it clearly says "Townsville House Cricket Association ... Premiers"

Does anyone know anything more about the photo? Could one of those pictured be your great, great Grand Father?

We'd love to hear from you!

Some of the last names recognizable on the team list are: Green , Glover, Bacon, Wright, Connolly, Strambini, Barrym, Donald, Ellis, MacDonald, Hodel, Reiniger.
