Karen Makkai our meditation teacher featured on this local podcast, talking about her meditation and cancer journey. Have a listen. 😍
Ladies, join plus for a September Fundraiser for Hope Horizons Inc cancer centre. https://www.facebook.com/share/1Be1kwcaeC/
Karen Makkai didn’t start out her working life teaching meditation, in fact she studied to be a speech pathologist.
In 2020 Karen was plunged into the world of breast cancer - she was diagnosed with an aggressive lobular carcinoma. What followed was the usual chaos of cancer; mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy.
To try and still her mind and manage her stress, her mood and to fill in the long hours of infusions, Karen turned to meditation. The practice has become central to Karen’s life….she lives, breathes and teaches mediation.
Karen wants to give back to the organisation that helped her on this long, scary journey…The Jenny Black Cancer Wellness Centre at Hope Horizons Toowoomba.
Karen is 5 years cancer free and to celebrate is holding a women’s only dance party called “Flashdance for Hope” 12 September 6.30pm at Rumours International.
In the words of William W. Purkey: "You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching, love like you'll never be hurt, sing like there's nobody listening, and live like it's heaven on earth."

A reminder that yoga isn't just exercise 🌸
At first glance, yoga can look like exercise. We build strength, improve flexibility, elevate the heart rate and challenge the body.
But the real practice runs much deeper.
What sets yoga apart from other movement styles is that we learn how to meet challenge.
Every posture is an opportunity to notice where we're holding unnecessary tension and let a little of it go.
Relax the shoulders.
Soften the jaw.
Engage the core so an overworked spine can relax.
Strengthen the legs to create a solid foundation.
Maybe even put a smile on your face when things get hard. 🙃
Strength is part of yoga. Effort is part of yoga.
But so is ease.
I say to my hot yoga attendees all the time:
"This practice reminds us that we can do hard things and still remain calm."
This has felt particularly relevant to me lately. My plate has been very full, as life simply is sometimes. And thank goodness for the incredible teachers and support team at Bloom, who make that full plate so much lighter.
I've been noticing how I've been meeting it all. And no, I haven't always been calm. I've felt overwhelmed, frustrated and stretched at times. But I've also noticed my ability to catch myself: to breathe, regulate, recognise when I'm reaching my limits and find my way back to steadiness.
That resilience, self-awareness and knowing when to hold firm and when to let go didn't appear overnight. It's something I've practised, over and over again.
We can't always remove the challenge. But we can notice how we're meeting it.
Are your shoulders up around your ears?
Are you holding your breath?
Are you using energy where you don't need to?
The same questions we ask on the mat apply off it too:
Where can I soften?
Where can I breathe?
Where can I let go, just a little?
We don't need to avoid hard things. We can learn to move through them with strength, without carrying tension we don't need. To find effort and ease. Challenge and calm.
Yoga doesn't make life easier. It makes us steadier.
The poses are simply the practice ground. Life is where we use it.
