Sometimes it is what develops because you started.

You trust yourself enough to take one step.
That step gives you experience.
Experience helps you develop competence.

And competence provides evidence that you can handle more than you previously believed.

The action does not need to be dramatic.
It might be:
Asking a question.
Expressing your perspective.
Trying something unfamiliar.
Making a decision without repeatedly seeking reassurance.
Or staying with a boundary even though someone else is disappointed.

Change does not only affect you.
It can create a ripple effect for the people around you.
That ripple effect can be something beautiful.
However, some changes may create more than a ripple.
They may ruffle a few feathers.

This can happen when you begin expressing your perspective and needs more clearly.

Perhaps you have usually been the one who adjusts.
You soften your words.
You explain yourself repeatedly.
You say yes when you would prefer to say no.
You apologise when there is nothing to apologise for.
Or you remain quiet because raising the issue feels more difficult than doing it yourself.

Then one day, you respond differently.

Your response starts with:
โ€œI cannot take that on.โ€
โ€œI do not agree.โ€
โ€œThat does not work for me.โ€
Or:
โ€œThis is what I need.โ€

You may even follow up with an alternative suggestion or redirect because you still want to be helpful where possible.
Even so, instead of responding to what you have said, someone tells you that you are being difficult, defensive, selfish, arrogant or controlling.

That can land particularly hard when assertiveness is still unfamiliar to you.
You may immediately begin questioning yourself:
Was I too direct?
Did I go too far?

This is where it helps to understand the destinct definitions.

Assertiveness means expressing your perspective, needs or boundaries clearly.
At the same time you still respect the other personโ€™s opinion or perspective and that they make their own choices.

Arrogance is different.
It treats your perspective as more important than theirs and may dismiss their experience because you assume that you know better.

Controlling behaviour attempts to determine what another person must do, think or feel, or tries to remove their choice.

Even with good intentions, communication can sometimes go awry.

Hence it can be good to check in:
Did I express what I needed clearly?
Was I respectful?
Did I leave the other person with their own agency?
Or was I trying to control their response or guarantee a particular outcome?

Sometimes feedback gives you useful information.
At other times, the reaction may reflect that someone is no longer receiving the automatic agreement or accommodation they had become accustomed to.

The aim is not to assume that you were right
Nor is it to immediately decide that you were wrong.

You are working hard to strengthen your self-trust and confidence.
Yet despite your efforts, it can feel as though you are getting nowhere.
But is that the whole truth?

You may still question some of your decisions.
You may sometimes get caught up in replaying a conversation.
You may still feel uncomfortable when someone does not seem to appreciate your perspective or decision.

And because the doubt and discomfort have not completely disappeared, you may conclude that nothing has changed.

But self-trust does not always arrive as a strong feeling of confidence.
Sometimes it first appears in small changes in how you respond.

Here are three most common signs that things may already be changing and your self-trust is becoming stronger and you might have missed

Someone asks something of you and, instead of automatically saying yes, you pause.
You might say:
โ€œLet me think about that.โ€
Or:
โ€œI need to check what I already have on.โ€

That means you are beginning to include yourself in the decision.
That signals to you and to the other person that your needs and capacity matter too.

You begin considering what matters to youโ€”not only what will keep other people happy or avoid disappointment.
Their needs still matter.

But they are no longer the only needs you consider or the driving factor in your decision.

You might begin to evaluate
What are my preferences?
What would I like to do? or
What brings my joy?

You may still second-guess yourself after making a decision or setting a boundary.
The difference is that you do not immediately reverse it because someone shows discomfort or question it.

You give yourself time to before reacting.
You review what happened.
And if the decision still feels aligned, you back yourself and stay with it.

From the outside, these changes may appear small.
But internally, something important is happening.

You are beginning to move from automatic responses towards choices that also include your needs, preferences and perspective.

Your confidence may not have fully caught up yet.

Especially if they are accustomed to you:
Saying yes.
Remaining quiet.
Adjusting your needs.
Avoiding disagreement.
Or taking responsibility for keeping everything running smoothly.

When you begin expressing a different perspective, saying no, asking for something or setting a boundary, the change may surprise them.

They may describe you as difficult, defensive, selfish or even arrogant.

Their discomfort does not automatically mean that something is wrong.
But neither does it mean their discomfort should be ignored completely.
It might be wise to reflect
Was I clear?
Was I respectful?
Did I express my perspective without dismissing theirs?
Did I communicate a boundaryโ€”or try to control their response?

Wouldnโ€™t it be nice if you could just flick a switch andโ€”prontoโ€”feel your confidence soar?
But real life is a little different.

You have something valuable to contribute in a meeting.
You have prepared for a conversation.
Or there is an opportunity you would genuinely like to pursue.

You know what matters and what you want to say.

But sometimes, when the moment comes, things go differently.
You might question whether your point matters.
You might wonder how other people will respond.
Will they take you seriously?
Will they question your expertise or experience?

And sometimes in the end, you might change what you wanted to sayโ€”or decide not to say anything after all.

Later, you may ask yourself:
Why didnโ€™t I speak up?
Where did the confidence go that I felt just moments before?

The challenge is that confidence is not a switch you can simply turn on.

You have the facts.
You take an action.
You learn from it.
You improve your knowledge, skills or delivery.

Through this, you collect evidence that you can handle the situation and respond to what happens.

That means the first action may not come from feeling completely confident.
It may come from trusting yourself enough to take one manageable step.
To ask the question.
Express one thought.
Apply for the opportunity.
Or begin the conversation.

That experience then gives your confidence something real to build upon.

So, instead of wondering:
โ€œHow can I be more confident?โ€

You might ask:

Being on your own does not automatically mean you are lonely.
Sometimes being on your own is exactly what you need.

Time to breathe.
Time to think.
Time to do something you enjoy.
Time without having to explain yourself.
Time to recharge your energy.

For some, being on their own is OK.
It is where they come back to themselves.

Feeling lonely is different.

Because loneliness is not about whether people are physically around you.
You can also feel lonely in a group.

At work or with family.
In a friendship and even in a relationship.
You can sit next to someone and still feel emotionally far away.
You can be surrounded by people and still feel unseen.

And sometimes that kind of loneliness can feel even harder than being alone.

Because when you are physically alone, the loneliness may make sense.
There is no one there.
But when you feel lonely around others, it can create a different kind of ache.

Why do I feel this way when people are right here?
Why do I still feel unseen?
Why does it feel like I have to keep so much inside?
Why does being around people sometimes make me feel even more alone?
The last one was something that I used to think a lot.

Maybe because the issue is not the absence of people.
Maybe it is the absence of real connection.

Feeling lonely does not mean you cannot be with yourself.

It does not mean you are asking for too much.
It does not mean you have to have people around you all the time.

Sometimes loneliness is a signal.

A signal that something in you is longing for a different kind of connection.
Somewhere you do not have to hold everything together.

Maybe it is less about why you feel lonely, and more about noticing what kind of connection you are missing.
Being heard.
Support with what you are feeling.
Being understood without having to explain every layer.
Someone who can sit with you in this without trying to fix it straight away.

Life throws all of us challenges now and then.

Some build slowly.
Some are expected.
And some seem to come out of nowhere.

A comment.
A reaction.
A change of plan.
A family dynamic or work situation.

A moment where you think:
โ€œWhat just happened?โ€

When something catches you off guard, it makes sense that your system reacts.
You might feel confused.
Your emotions might feel bigger than expected.
Your body might tense up.
You may find yourself becoming defensive, justifying yourself, withdrawing, or shutting down.

That does not mean something is wrong with you.
It means something in you is responding to the situation.
And that is a significantly different.

Because blaming or arguing with yourself usually adds another layer of stress.
As now you are not only dealing with the situation.
You are also fighting yourself for having a response.

And a stressed, overwhelmed, or confused mind is usually not the clearest place to make decisions from.

That is why grounding matters.
Not as a magic fix.
But as an anchor.

A way to come back to yourself enough to ask:
What is happening right now?
What matters here?
What is mine to respond to, act on, or take on?
What belongs with someone else?
And then
What do I need to be able to express this clearly?

When something comes out of nowhere, your mind may first need to understand what is actually happening before you can respond clearly.

This is when making sense of the situation can be useful.
Not by overthinking or analysing it into exhaustion.
But to orient yourself.

To find out:
What is actually happening here?
Is this about the current situation, or is something else being brought into it?
Is there a misunderstanding?
Has an old dynamic been activated or a boundary been crossed?
What is being asked of me or mine to respond to?

This is especially important in conversations.

If someone is agitated, defensive, loud, or emotional, and you meet them with the same energy, the situation can escalate quickly.

Their fire feeds your fire.
Your fire feeds theirs.
And suddenly the conversation is no longer constructive.

It becomes about defence.
Protection.
Proving a point.
Or being heard at any cost.

That does not mean you have to stay silent or accept being disrespected.
And it does not mean you make yourself smaller.

However sometimes the strongest next step is to slow down and not to add more fuel.
You might take a breath.
Feel your feet on the floor.
Come back to the facts and ask one grounded question.
Or pause the conversation if it is no longer constructive.

When life throws you a curve ball, the goal is not to ignore what is happening or shut yourself down.

The goal is to stay connected and anchored with yourself, so you can respond with more clarity, care, and intention.
Not perfectly.
Not every time.
But more often.

You made a decision.
You trusted your judgement.
You set the boundary.
You tried something new.

You followed what felt right at the time.
And then things did not turn out the way you expected or foresaw.

Sometimes you may be able to review it and see what you can take from the experience for the next time.

But other times, especially when it really mattered to you, the questioning can become much harsher.

It can turn into blame.
Or generalisation.

โ€œI always get things wrong.โ€
โ€œI should have known better.โ€
โ€œWhy did I think I could do that?โ€
โ€œI should have listened to others.โ€
and then in the end
โ€œI should not have trusted myself.โ€

And just like that, one experience becomes a reason to doubt yourself again.

It might be helpful to look at trust in general for a moment.

We often say trust is earned.
And yes, trust can take time to build.

With other people, we may look for:
Consistency.
Honesty.
Accountability.

But we may also give them the benefit of the doubt.
We may consider the context.
We may ask what happened.
We may recognise that one difficult moment does not always define the whole person.

But when it comes to ourselves, the standard becomes much harsher.
One mistake.
One outcome that did not go as expected.
One decision that did not go well.

And suddenly it becomes:
โ€œSee, this is why I cannot trust myself.โ€

But self-trust is not the belief that you will never get it wrong.
It is not the promise that every decision will work out perfectly.
It is not about knowing everything in advance.

You can reflect and take responsibility without abandoning yourself.
You can review the experience with curiosity and care.
Like, the way you would with a friend.

And you might ask:
What happened?
What mattered to you there?
What did you know and didnt know at the time?
What can you take from this and do differently next time?

That is very different from using the experience against yourself.
Because learning from something is not the same as turning it into proof that you should never trust yourself again.

Can you back yourself while still being honest about what happened?
Can you take responsibility without making the whole experience mean something terrible about you?
Can you offer yourself the same benefit of the doubt you might offer someone else?

Not to excuse everything.
Not to avoid responsibility.

But to understand.
To adjust.
And to keep building a relationship with yourself where one difficult outcome does not define your ability to trust yourself.

The question is not:
โ€œWhy did I trust myself?โ€

But rather:
โ€œWhat can I take away from this and still stay connected to myself?โ€
That is self-trust too.

Not perfect certainty.
Not always getting it right.

This is not a fixed and rigid program where you have to follow a preset path.
We create together the path that fits you to come home to yourself and live a life based on choice and self-trust.

There is no ideal time to get started, there will always be things that come up.

You know the pattern.
For example you tell yourself:
โ€œI should be going for a walkโ€ but find it simply too hard to get moving.

You have the experience that you feel better after a walk.
You might even have managed to change your clothes.
Something else catches your mind and attention.

Time goes by and โ€œWell, now itโ€™s too late to go for a walkโ€
The shoes remain untouched and you continue with the next task.

You do know that going for a walk can help you:
Get a fresh perspective.
Feel more alive.
Feel more grounded and settled within yourself.
Shift your focus and release some tension

But something inside you keeps stopping you from following through.

And afterwards, the inner critic arrives.
โ€œWhy did I do that again?โ€
โ€œI should know better.โ€
โ€œI know what to do, so why can I not do it?โ€

But maybe slowing down means you might start feeling what you have been pushing aside.
Maybe you havenโ€™t been walking for a while and feel uncomfortable or embarrassed.
Maybe continuing with a task that you are familiar with gives you a sense of control.

Changing behaviour is not always just about discipline.
Or motivation.
Or willpower.

Sometimes the old behaviour is doing something for you.
Even if it is also costing you.

It may be giving you a sense of safety.
Predictability.
Acceptance.
Control.
Avoidance of conflict.
And also possible protection from disappointment, judgement, or the unknown

That does not mean the behaviour is helping you move forward.

It means part of you may have learned that this behaviour keeps you safe.
Or at least safer than the alternative.
Such as
People-pleasing might keep the peace.
Procrastination might protect you from judgement.
Staying quiet might reduce conflict.
Pushing through might help you avoid feeling what is underneath.
Staying where you are might feel safer than facing uncertainty.

Not because you are weak.
Not because you are not serious about change.

That is why awareness matters.

When you feel stuck, it can help to pause before forcing yourself to change.

First, get clear on why the change matters.
What outcome are you moving towards?
What difference will it make in your day, your energy, your confidence, your relationships, your life?

The next time you are not able to follow through on your intention
review what is happening inside you and maybe ask:
What does this behaviour give me?
What does it protect me from?
What need is it trying to meet?
And then:
How can I meet that need in a way that supports me now?

Because lasting change is not only about stopping the old behaviour.

It is about understanding why it made sense in the first place.
What it has been protecting.
And what support, skills, or new choices you need so the change can feel possible.
