Craig Carroll – Crumlin Boxing Club

PCYC Hornsby’s Matin Yazdani returned to competition after almost a year away, stepping into the ring for the 15th time and his first bout in the Elite ranks. The 18-year-old had his older brother and coach Bayan Yaz in his corner.

Across the ring was Crumlin Boxing Club’s Craig Carroll. The 28-year-old, coached by Phil Sutcliffe, was making his first appearance on Australian soil in his eighth bout.

And their contrasting styles made for an absolute cracker of a welterweight contest.

Carroll brought the classic stick-and-move style, with clever shot selection and some excellent counterpunching.

Yazdani took a very different approach. Hands low, stalking his opponent around the ring, slipping and weaving his way into range before letting the power shots go.

Yazdani swept the opening round on all three cards.

Carroll answered by taking the second on all three.

One round apiece. Everything riding on the third.
And even then, the judges couldn’t agree.

The final round was split, with Yazdani doing just enough to get his hand raised — one solitary point separating the pair on the final scorecards.

Two completely different approaches. Neither willing to give an inch. And a contest that could have gone either way right until the final bell.

Take a bow, lads. That was quality.

Scott Piggott – Doyle Boxing Club

Fourteen years away from the ring, and one emphatic way to announce your return.

Doyle Boxing Club’s Scott Piggott stepped back through the ropes at Paddo Punch-On 21 for a cruiserweight matchup against Easts Boxing’s Billy Handford, who was making his amateur debut.

It was a cracking back-and-forth contest, but Handford had edged the opening two rounds and entered the third ahead on all three judges’ scorecards.

Piggott needed something big.

Taking instructions from his coach Brian Doyle, he came out for the final round knowing what was required. He backed Handford into his home corner and landed the shot that changed the fight, sending his opponent to the canvas and bringing the contest to an end.

Fourteen years between fights. Two rounds down. One round to turn it around.

And that’s exactly what he did.

A pretty damn memorable return to the ring and a worthy Paddo Punch-On Fighter of the Night.

10-BELL SALUTE FOR COACH BILLY FINE

Tonight, we’ll pause the Paddo Punch-On to remember and honour Coach Billy Fine.

At approximately 7:45pm, during intermission, we will come together as one community to share a few words and for a 10-bell salute in Billy’s memory.

Billy was a much-loved member of our boxing family. A coach, mentor and friend whose warmth and presence touched so many within our sport.

His loss will be deeply felt, and he will be greatly missed.

Tonight, we celebrate his life, his contribution to boxing, and the beautiful soul behind it all.

Please join us in raising the roof one last time for Billy, before we fall silent and the bells ring in his honour.

Rest easy, Coach 🤍

🥊 YOUTH MEN’S WELTERWEIGHT — NSW vs TASMANIA

Another NSW vs Tassie clash hits the Paddo this Friday night, as 17-year-old George O’Callaghan from O’Callaghan Boxing Gym takes on 17-year-old Nicholas Darcy from Battaglia Boxing.

O’Callaghan is making the trip across from Penguin on Tasmania’s North West Coast, with his dad and coach Gavin O’Callaghan in his corner.

Across the ring, Darcy represents Battaglia Boxing and is coached by Mike Battaglia and the team at FORMA. He makes his return to Oxford Street this Friday, having last featured at Paddo Punch-On 14.

16-year-old Noah Brookman from Balmain Boxing Club takes on 16-year-old Sam Greenfield from BTS Boxing this Friday night.

Coached by Emmet Brown, Brookman will be making his amateur debut under the Paddo lights.

Across the ring, Brett Townsend-trained Greenfield has a little more experience behind him — and some happy memories of Oxford Street, having picked up the win the last time he fought here at Paddo Punch-On 17.

Two young fighters continue building their experience this Friday night, as 15-year-old Jeb Lusad from Northend Combat Academy takes on 16-year-old Noah Farley from The BNK Boxing.

Coached by Gavin Snape, Lusad returns for his second competitive outing and will be looking to put everything he learned from his debut into practice.

Across the ring, Sebastian Coorey-Coombs and Luke Jackson-trained Farley has a little more ring time behind him and will be looking to build on that experience under the Paddo lights.

Two young bantamweights, both learning their craft and eager to show what they can do.
