All about how to manage fatigue when youre hypermobile.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: this info doesnt apply to those with ME/CFS, thats a whole different ballgame & these tips may potentially make you worse ⚠️

In all honesty, its a lot of the basics- getting enough sleep, getting adequate nutrition, doing appropriate movement etc

But i think the most important thing in want to drive home is that its understandable that you feel so tired. Our bodies are working overtime just to keep up together. It doesn't make you "lazy" or morally wrong, its your body giving your information that it needs something- maybe food, water, movement, REST, listen to it.

Let me know if this was helpful & also how you personally manage fatigue!

How does moving your eyes side to side unlock hamstring flexibility? 👀

Our brain is constantly asking our eyes "are we safe, are we safe" & if our vision is impaired (& you may not even realise it!), that tells our nervous system "we may not be safe, so lets be on guard juuuuust in case." So our muscles tighten up, including our hamstrings. Our brain is unclear of our surroundings & then determines that uncertainty is a threat. Our inputs are blurry, so will be our outputs.

One way to help "unblur" our inputs is via saccades, although there are MANY other ways to do this. Saccades are soooooo soothing on the nervous system & reduces that "protective" mechanism, allowing our muscles to relax & therefore increasing range of motion.

So next time your hamstrings are feeling tight, instead of doing another seated forward fold to no avail, try saccades & see what happens!

Heres a little checklist you can use the next time your hypermobile body decides it wants to be temperamental!

I know these things can seem like "duh Gia" but lets be real, when were in the midst of feeling sh*tty, our brain isnt exactly working the best, so having these things laid out can be really useful & stops us from using unnecessary spoons 🥄

My favourite is the last one & one we should be regularly practising. Its very easy to get frustrated with our bodies, however that frustration keeps our nervous system in a tizzy & can keep us feeling crappy or make us feel even worse.

Sometimes the simplest things, like laying down on the floor (I love floor time!!) or eating a piece of fruit really can make us feel even the slightest bit better & everything counts!

Hopefully this is helpful & let me know what you would add to this list or your little tips you do when you feel icky.

Did i do this trend right lol

But in all seriousness- resistance training, neuro work & nervous system based practises completely saved my life. Took me from bedridden due to fatigue + pain at 24, to being 27 & able to travel in my van around australia for the last 2 years (im 29 now!)

I truly believe everyone who is currently struggling with chronic pain CAN feel, at the very least, slightly better than how they feel now. There is hope to living a more full life when your hypermobile, you just need to figure out what your body needs & give it that!

I love the leg press to help develop lower body strength safely, however it can cause more harm then good if done incorrectly. Here are the most common issues I find with hypermobile humans using the leg press & how to fix them.

💪 have a pad or rolled up towel etc to support your next

💪 keep knee soft the entire mocement, do not lock then out

💪 if theres still weird knee stuff going on, try squeezing your knees in slightly and/or using a b***y bands above or below your knees

💪 make sure your foot is flat on the platform the entire time & youre not coming up onto tippy toes

💪 use a very slow tempo, at least 3 seconds up & down with pauses at end ranges of motion

💪 only go to ~60% of your max range of motion so that your bum stays planted on the seat, not lifting up

Let me know if you have any other machines or exercises you'd like me to explain how to make hypermobile friendly 😇
