Your lymphatic system doesn’t have one central pump - so movement matters.

Lymphatic vessels have their own rhythmic contractions, while breathing, muscle activation and joint movement also help move fluid through the body.

When the lymphatic system is impaired, swelling, tightness and heaviness can develop. Effective management is rarely about one treatment alone. Depending on the individual, it may combine:

* Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
* Compression
* Tailored movement therapy

At Balance & Restore, Liane is qualified to deliver Complex Physical Therapy for lymphoedema assessment and management and is an ALA Accredited Lymphoedema Practitioner.

With a fully equipped Clinical Pilates studio onsite, hands-on treatment can be supported by safe movement tailored to the individual.

If you or someone you know is living with lymphoedema, contact us on 0400 012 693 to discuss a tailored program.

Persistent, unexplained or rapidly changing swelling should always be medically assessed.

Balance is not produced by one muscle. It is a sensory calculation made continuously by your brain.

To keep you upright, the brain combines information from:

* Your eyes
* The vestibular system in your inner ear
* Proprioceptors in your muscles, joints and connective tissues

In a well-lit room, vision provides strong information about your position. On a dim Lane Cove footpath, that visual information becomes less reliable, so the brain must place greater weight on the other systems.

This is why someone may feel steady during the day but less confident at night, on an uneven surface or when turning their head.

Effective balance training should involve more than repeatedly standing on one leg. Under safe supervision, we can vary the base of support, head position, surface, movement direction and available sensory information.

Small improvements today can have a big impact tomorrow.

There is an important difference between strength and power.

Strength is how much force your muscles can produce. Power is how quickly they can produce it.

When you catch your toe on a step, you do not have several seconds to recover. Your nervous system must recognise the loss of balance, recruit the appropriate muscles and produce a fast corrective step.

Muscle power tends to decline faster than maximum strength as we age, which is why slow strengthening alone may not prepare the body for every real-life challenge.

At Pilates Connection, we can use springs, supportive equipment and carefully adjusted tempos to train a quicker muscular response without immediately progressing to jumping or high-impact exercise. The challenge is matched to the individual’s joints, confidence and current ability.

The Scar Has Healed - So Why Are You Still Moving Differently? 06/08/2026

After surgery or injury, the skin may heal while the tissues beneath it - and the movement habits around it - remain restricted.

You might notice pulling when reaching overhead, less rotation on one side, a shortened stride or another part of your body working harder to compensate.

Our latest blog explores how scar tissue can sometimes affect tissue glide, posture and joint movement - and how gentle Scar Tissue Therapy combined with tailored Pilates can help restore movement that is comfortable, controlled and useful in everyday life.

Can you still turn your body... without compensating?

Most of us don't notice we've lost spinal mobility until everyday movements start feeling awkward.

- Looking over your shoulder when reversing the car.
- Reaching into the back seat.
- Playing golf or tennis.
- Gardening.
- Even getting out of bed.

More often than not, the problem isn't your neck - it's stiffness through your thoracic spine, the middle section of your back that's designed to rotate.

When this area becomes restricted, your body finds another way. Your neck twists further, your lower back works harder, and over time those compensations can contribute to pain, stiffness and reduced movement confidence.

At Pilates Connection, we assess how your whole body moves, not just where it hurts. Restoring thoracic mobility helps your joints share the workload more efficiently, making everyday movements feel smoother, easier and more comfortable.

Because healthy ageing isn't just about being strong... it's about continuing to move well.

Book an initial consultation and see where your movement strengths lie.

Has your stride quietly become shorter?

Reduced hip extension can change much more than the length of your step. It may affect how your pelvis, lower back, knees and ankles share the work every time you walk.

In our latest blog, we explain why this happens, the compensations to look for, and why simply walking more may not improve the way you walk.

Walking further is valuable. Walking well enough to keep doing it for years to come is longevity.

The muscle that’s quietly doing more work than you realise...

When people think about their glutes, they often picture the large muscles that help us climb stairs or stand up from a chair. But one of the most important muscles for healthy ageing is much smaller - the gluteus medius.

Located on the side of your hip, this muscle stabilises your pelvis every time you take a step. If it’s weak, your body starts to compensate, which can contribute to:
• Hip pain
• Lower back discomfort
• Knee pain
• Poor balance
• Difficulty walking on uneven ground

At Pilates Connection, we don’t just strengthen muscles - we look at how they’re working together. The gluteus medius is one of the key muscles we assess because improving its function can make walking feel more stable, reduce unnecessary strain on other joints, and help keep you moving confidently for years to come.

It’s a great reminder that sometimes the muscles making the biggest difference aren’t the biggest muscles at all.
