Kenpo 5.0 is a unique martial art encompassing both stand-up and ground self-defence techniques. The syllabus is kept dynamic and practical due to the evolving nature of the art to ensure skills are developed to defend from an array of styles and conditions. Classes are taught by certified Head Instructor and Australian representative David Giovenco, a 6th degree Black Belt who trained under Master Jeff Speakman, and his team of skilled Instructors. Classes are available for kids, teenagers and adults. We welcome anyone to come and train with us!

That's deliberate.
The middle of the journey is the hardest part. You're long past the excitement of starting, and still a fair way from the finish. Nobody's throwing a party for you. It's just showing up, week after week, doing the work.
That's where most people quietly stop.
So we mark it. The black gi says: you've done the hard bit that nobody claps for, and you're on the doorstep now.
Good things in life aren't easy. But they're achievable when someone breaks them into steps worth reaching for. 🖤

Ask any parent what they expected their four-year-old to learn here and they'll say kicking.
What actually happens first is a lot quieter than that.
Standing on their spot. Facing the front. Keeping their hands by their sides. Waiting their turn when the kid next to them gets called first, and not making a fuss about it.
For a Tiny Tiger, sixty seconds of standing still is genuinely hard work. Harder than any kick we teach them. And it's the thing that makes everything after it possible — on the mat, and in a classroom next year.
The kicks come. They always do.
But the stillness is the part we're proudest of. 🐯

They learn it through small habits, repeated until they stick.

With school holidays nearly here, routines are about to get a shake up. That's normal. A few anchors help:

🛏️ A regular bedtime, most nights
📵 Screens off well before sleep
🏃 Moving their body every day
🗓️ Showing up when they said they would, even on the "don't feel like it" days

That last one matters most. The class they didn't want to come to is often the one they walk out proudest of.

Good things aren't easy. Our job is to break the hard stuff into wins a kid can actually reach.

"Will martial arts make my child more aggressive?"

It's one of the most common questions parents ask us. A research review published in July gives a pretty honest answer.

Researchers looked at 11 studies on martial arts and aggression in kids and teens. The result? Martial arts on its own doesn't guarantee a calmer child. Outcomes varied a lot.

What mattered was how it's taught. The researchers saw the most potential where training came with clear values, respect, non-violence and good guidance. They also noted that environments focused on winning and dominance may weaken those benefits.

We read that and nodded. It's why we've always put character before combat, and community before trophies.

The martial art matters less than the school teaching it.

It's R U OK? Day.
One thing thirteen years of teaching has taught us: kids don't announce it when something's wrong. They go quiet. They stop putting their hand up. They train the whole class without saying a word, and if you're not paying attention it just looks like a good, well-behaved night.
The mat is unusually good for noticing this. Same kids, same room, same time every week. When a child who normally can't stop talking suddenly can't be bothered, it shows.
So our instructors ask. Not in a big way. Just "you alright tonight?" while everyone's tying their belts. Sometimes the answer is nothing. Sometimes it's a whole story about school.
You don't need to be a professional to ask a kid how they're going. You just need to know them well enough to notice when something's changed.

He never wanted to compete.

Every time a tournament came up, the answer was the same. No thanks.

This year, he finally said yes.

Then he put the work in. Week after week he ran his form, asked his coaches what to fix, and went back and fixed it.

He came home with a medal. Honestly, that's not the part we'll remember.

We'll remember how his form looks now compared to a few months ago. Sharper. Calmer. Sure of itself. That kind of focus doesn't come from a trophy. It comes from choosing to work at something hard.

Sunday's grading.
Have a proper look at this photo. Every student in it stood up in front of a full room and was tested on things they couldn't do six months ago.
Some were nervous. A few didn't think they'd get through it. They all did.
That's the part we care about. Not the belt itself, but what a kid learns about themselves when they do something hard and come out the other side. That doesn't stay on the mat. It shows up at school, in friendships, in how they handle the next hard thing.
Well done to every one of you. And thank you to the parents who sat through the nerves and got them here week after week. 👏

White belt is standing in a room where everyone else knows what they're doing. It's not knowing where to put your feet, or what the words mean, or whether you're allowed to ask. It's being the only person who gets it wrong and feeling like everyone saw.
Black belt is hard in a different way. It's long and demanding, but by then you know how the room works. You know you belong in it.
Every person on our mat wore a white belt first. The senseis. The competitors. The teenagers who look like they were born doing this. All of them stood exactly where a new student stands, feeling exactly the same thing.
So if you're waiting until your child is ready, or fit enough, or confident enough, that's not how it works. Nobody arrives ready. They arrive as a white belt and become ready.

Footy's wrapping up. Netball's nearly done. Cricket hasn't started.
Which means a lot of kids are about to spend six weeks doing nothing, then start again from scratch in October.
We don't have a season. No sign-on period, no finals, no summer where the club goes quiet. Your child trains in September, trains through the holidays, trains in January. The belt they're working toward doesn't pause because the weather changed.
There's also no bench. Nobody sits out because the coach is playing the stronger kids. Every child on the mat trains for the entire class, every class.

Every kid who walks in here has someone standing behind them.
One of our students spent his first two months sitting off the mat. Too scared to join in. His dad sat there with him. Every class. Didn't push him. Didn't rush him. Just stayed.
That kid is a student leader now.
We see it every week. The dads on the chairs at the edge of the mat. The ones driving over after work. The ones holding pads in the lounge room because their kid asked them to.
You're a bigger part of this than you know.
