⭐ Meet the Committee – Harley Almira, General Committee

A familiar face on competition nights, Harley has been part of Wenty Leagues Table Tennis since 2013 and is a regular representative of the club in the Table Tennis Western Sydney competition.

Harley is often found captaining one of our Wenty teams, playing alongside fellow Filipino players and helping bring them together as part of the wider Wenty table tennis community. A fun and friendly presence on competition nights, Harley is known for his sportsmanship and for treating teammates and opponents alike with respect.

For Harley, one of the best things about table tennis is the people he meets along the way. Whether he's competing, captaining a team or simply catching up with familiar faces around the hall, he enjoys the friendships and sense of community that come with the sport.

Away from the table, Harley works in building construction and renovation and enjoys spending time gardening. He is also a big cat lover, having 2 of his own.

Thinking about joining Wenty Leagues Table Tennis? Come along to one of our club nights and say hello to Harley and the committee – we'd love to welcome you to the club.

⭐ Meet the Committee – Joybroto Sarkar, General Committee

For Joy, table tennis has always been about more than what happens on the table.

Although he had played socially before, Joy only began training seriously and entered the competitive table tennis scene in 2017, starting out in Divisions 3 and 4 at SNDTA. Since then, the sport has become a big part of his life, with many of the friendships he has made in Sydney coming through the table tennis community. After joining Wenty in 2020, it was the club's vibe and social circle that quickly became his favourite part of being a member.

That love of connecting with people carries into his professional life too. Joy works at the University of Sydney as a Business Analyst, where interacting with people is an important part of what he enjoys about his work.

Away from table tennis, Joy is something of a homebody. Give him a good book or a game of FIFA on the Xbox and he's quite happy staying in. Summer, however, might tempt him outside – he loves spending time at the beach and has a longstanding passion for motorbikes. After owning a collection of high-performance bikes over the years, these days he's taken things down a notch with what he describes as a "slow" 750cc street bike!

Born in India and having travelled extensively in his younger years, Joy has experienced plenty of places and communities – but here in Sydney, table tennis has helped him find a social circle of his own.

Thinking about joining Wenty Leagues Table Tennis? Come along to one of our club nights and say hello to Joy and the committee – we'd love to welcome you to the club.

⭐ Meet the Committee – Gaurav Marwah, General Committee

Gaurav joined Wenty Leagues Table Tennis in 2022, but his introduction to competitive table tennis came a few years earlier – and involved being thrown straight into the deep end. Without a rating and still new to the Sydney competition scene, Gaurav mistakenly entered the NSW Open as his very first tournament in 2018. As he puts it, it was a humbling introduction to competitive table tennis!

Since then, his enthusiasm for the sport has only grown. Gaurav particularly enjoys the positive energy among our members and the sense of belonging at Wenty, describing the club as feeling like a second home. He's also a self-confessed table tennis equipment ju**ie who loves experimenting with new blades, rubbers and setups whenever he gets the chance.

Table tennis has even become a family interest, with Gaurav's 14-year-old daughter taking up the sport as well. And while he admits he's not much of a traveller without a reason, a good table tennis tournament is apparently reason enough – he's used competitions as an excuse to travel both around Australia and overseas.

Away from table tennis, Gaurav works as a Principal Analyst at APRA, combining his interests in accounting, economics and IT. His other sporting interest is competitive pistol shooting, so it's fair to say he appreciates sports where precision and concentration matter!

Thinking about joining Wenty Leagues Table Tennis? Come along to one of our club nights and say hello to Gaurav and the committee – we'd love to welcome you to the club.

⭐ Meet the Committee – Jono Xie, Public Officer

Jono (that's me!) joined Wenty Leagues Table Tennis in 2023 after discovering a passion for the sport in high school. What started as a hobby quickly became an obsession, with a fascination for the depth, strategy, and constant learning that table tennis offers. Above all, he loves how the sport brings together people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds, creating friendships both on and off the table.

As Public Officer, Jono enjoys finding new ways to promote the club and share what makes Wenty such a welcoming community. From creating graphics and writing Facebook posts to capturing photos and developing new ideas, he enjoys combining his creativity with his passion for table tennis.

Away from the club, Jono enjoys keeping active through the gym and running with mates. He also follows the professional table tennis and tennis scenes, enjoys relaxing with video games in his free time, and is always happy to show off photos of his five-year-old Staffy, Blaze.

If you're thinking about joining Wenty Leagues Table Tennis, come along to one of our club nights and say hello – I’d love to welcome you to the club!
